How many Black '56 Merc Monterey Wagons My father special ordered a Black 1956 Mercury Monterey Station Wagon in late 1955. I know that there were 13,280 Monterey Wagons built in that model year. Is there any source for the numbers of the various color combinations that were produced ? I Googled color charts for that model and year. I could find no listings for Black Merc Monterey Wagons. Is it possible that his was a special order paint job ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/362897139306?chn=ps The colors were not given in the 1956-59 MERC MPC. The CHIP CHART was inserted into the front of the MPC and/or PRICE BOOK. The actual numbers of cars assembled with color would not have been released by FORD and/or if available at one time, was either discarded or lost in the ROTUNDA FIRE. |

Re: How many Black '56 Merc Monterey Wagons Special order paint job? Wouldn't need to be. '56 Merc color chart shows Tuxedo Black was a standard color. Merc used it on cars in '55 too although the color may have had a different name. You could special order a black car from the dealer, but it wouldn't be anything special for the factory to crank out a car that already had the desired color as a standard color that year.

Re: How many Black '56 Merc Monterey Wagons Factory ordering a car was more or less the norm, back then. Of course the dealer would have several units in stock and if you liked the options, you could take one of them right now--today. But, "special ordering" was not really "special", nor does it indicate that any of the options were "special" by themselves, or in combination with the other options. Cars were more individual, back then, and people did not mind waiting a few weeks to get exactly what they wanted.

Re: How many Black '56 Merc Monterey Wagons I am probably dating myself, but I ordered a few cars and trucks. It took most times 7 to 8 weeks to get it. Ford would send you a post card letting you know the date you car was scheduled to go thru the line.

Re: How many Black '56 Merc Monterey Wagons What does it day for color on your data plate? If it has the code for black that means it was a factory color. If it is S then that means it was a non stock color and was special ordered.
