Question on mounting the fan on a '48 59A engine in a '36

I am replacing the original 21 stud '36 flathead in my '36 coupe with a '48 59A. The new engine does not have a fan setup but it does have a Powermaster alternator and bracket. With the water pumps in the block on the '48 and the Powermaster not having the fan mounted to it like the '36 had on the front of its generator, where does the fan mount? Or where should the fan mount to align with the radiator core in my '36 coupe? Thanks!

Because of the slanted radiator in the 36 ford you may have to make your own set up. Look carefully at this thread for ideas.

Didn't "Heard" solve this problem with "V8 Coopman"?

I have a similar setup in my 33, I just fitted the 33 inlet manifold ,generator and carb, no problems

Re: Question on mounting the fan on a '48 59A engine in a '36

v8's fan solution is a great idea and will work when installing an 8BA in a 36Ford..

However, the front mount crab distributor on the 59A will present huge fan clearance and fan pulley bracket clearance problems not encountered with the 8BA side mount distributor.

Perhaps the best solution is to mount the fan on the crank pulley like a 40 Ford.

Ditto to Laurie's post.....mounting fans directly to generators and alternators that are not equipped with a front bearing system to properly support the additional load of a fan, can be disastrous and downright dangerous.

Have done same as Lawrie and JM.

If it was mine, I'd use an original generator with the required 36 front fan setup. You can always have it updated/converted over to a 12V alternator - which will give you all the benefits of an alternator but packaged in an original style generator - with the necessary fan mount.

These conversions are NOT cheap, but they work well and the people are good people. I'm running one on my 32 Cabriolet - has worked flawlessly (and I flog the car quite a bit).

I too run an EJ Whitney converted generator in my 34 with a 59a motor. They make them in 6v neg ground also. Mine is 12 v, and will barely keep up running sealed beam headlights. On the highway, just fine, but at low rpm's around town the amp gauge is usually running around zero. OK with me, I think its a good solution to the fan problem.

Started with a speedway pulley , ran the lath and created bearing pocket . Used Ford bracket and fan

Now that is an interesting picture, in that you chose to drive the fan from a modified, double pulley mounted on the generator (alternator in our case). I'll be the first to say I like your end product. Lots of thought went into that. But....that is NOT a '35/'36 chassis. Looks like a '32 possibly going by the crossmember and front axle details. Your fan mounts higher than ours, which in a '36 with it's radiator leaning rearward would likely have dire fan/radiator interference at top of fan.

Would you have further details on the fan assembly itself, as well as the aluminum-colored pulley? Like I said, nice build!

Step-down; Yes, It would indeed be very helpful to many others if you would post detailed info. about how you made the components and assembled that set up, including the generator fitment. Nice job.

Re: Question on mounting the fan on a '48 59A engine in a '36

Yes 32 frame , 59 eng. Tattersfield manifold , power master alt.

Bought double pulley from powemaster but had to open up the V in the pulley for wider belt
The alum color pulley is from speedway , I used model A flywheel bearing on both side of the pulley and lath cut to fit. Cut a custom shaft to hold it together

The bracket is a Ford and the fan and hub assembly was bought from third generation

This is the second one I’ve build and first still working 20 years later

Fun project , first time I blow a hole in a beautiful Griffin radiator ☹️

Re: Question on mounting the fan on a '48 59A engine in a '36

As always, great info from everyone. Thank you! It appears that a simple solution to running the stock 36 fan is to use an alternator pully drilled for the 36 fan, thus replicating location and function of the stock 36 setup except for the waterpump location. Am I missing something? Can the powermaster alternator support the load of the fan?
Thanks!

Thanks, Step-down for "stepping up" and providing the additional info.

Having a lathe is "golden".

YES Sir....Thank you for the added info. One or two more detailed pictures of the hub assembly would be 'GOLDEN'. I really get excited about SOME of these well-built and well-thought-out homemade devices, and yours.... very much so!

Gosh, looks like the storm is going to hit central FL pretty hard. I think it will miss Ft. Lauuderdale area aside from the rain.

You stay safe and dry. JIM
