Re: 1932 Ford model B standard phaeton WOW

Reminds me of the green Model B standard roadster that turned 10 or fifteen years ago, although this phaeton appears to be in overall better condition.

Unlike with '32 roadsters, there were substantially more standard '32 phaetons produced worldwide than the deluxe version (3,089 versus 2,162). The reverse was the case in U.S. production, but only slightly so with 1.278 deluxe versions and 1,213 standard versions produced. Like with roadsters, I suspect that the apparent survival rate is skewed toward the deluxe versions by virtue of some of the standards being 'converted'.

It would be a crime to restore that car, what a beautiful survivor!

Sold Price: $48,000.00, don't forget Buyer's premium: $9,600.00 (jaw on the floor) $57,600.00 plus sales tax $??? plus transportation $???. = That's a BIG BUCKS car. Just maybe the pre war early Ford V8 market is still making carbon monoxide.

All in, cost wise, not a bargain, but it took at least two bidders to get it where it ended up.

Wonderful patina, but plenty of “done” examples out there for similar pricing. Odd.

I know this car well, I helped remove/load it from my friend's garage and put it in a trailer with Mark Smith.

My friend Andy's uncle 'Link' (passed in about 2010) owned the car for many years and when we started cleaning out his garage the family decided to sell it. Mark came by and offered to buy it and some other parts and because Mark was such a genuine car guy, it was sold to him. Mark's health was not good at the time (he'd been battling cancer), but he really wanted to have the phaeton and said that he would never restore it - which was a bonus for the family.

Anyway, RIP Mark Smith - you were one heck of a cool car guy and a pleasure to know for a brief time.

Side Note: Mark had managed to acquire an extremely rare car that Link had brought back from Germany where he was stationed in the Army in the early 50's. It was an original Mercedes 500K 4 passenger convertible (supercharged) that was originally a gift from Hitler to Rudolph Hess.

Link had it for many years and sold it prior to his death. He always called it his "retirement plan". Link thought he was selling it to a "friend" and the friend ended up just brokering it to somebody else (that really pissed Link off). Mark ended up with it a few years later. It ran perfectly as Link had the Mercedes factory go through the engine while in Germany. Mark wanted my friend Andy and I to come down to see him and he was going to take us for a ride in the 500K - but then, damn COVID showed up . . . end of story.

Here is the car at Amelia Island - what a machine:

Here is a link to a video of Mark driving it - it was at Amelia Island in 2019:

Side Note: Andy's family still have some rare parts from/for that car. I've seen a set of horns that I believe were part of it - and a spinner/wheel cap, etc..

On the 37 Airstream . . . that one BLEW ME AWAY! It is just a shell, nothing even inside of it. Some folks had some real 'extra money' to play with that day.

It amazing the reception the Mercedes 500K get and the accompanying history attached to it, when we showed our 32 At Pebble in 2003/04 and referenced “it’s” German heritage and Gauleiter ownership, you’d of thought we were there promoting the Nazi Party!! “Almost” told “not”
To talk about it!!!
