What oil pressure sending unit 59AB in a 1941 Ford

Hello All,
Im new here and new to flatheads... Ive rebuilt a few motors includding a Packard 374...
I have a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe with a 59AB motor.. the stock gauge is a 50# if I am not mistaken.. the 59AB is an 80# sending unit.. I get a bad reading on dash
Should I swap the 80# to 50# or leave it as is?
Thank you,,,

Swap it. It has to match the gauge.

Ken is correct. Just went thru this on my 42 Ford coupe with a 59 A-B engine.

Most new or NOS senders are 80 lb that started in 1942; they are all marked 80 on the base. You can still find the 50 lb senders, used. They are pretty reliable. If you find one that is not marked on the fitting on the underside, it is a 50 lb unit.

The 50 lb gauge on your '41 will still work with a 80 lb sender, just read 62.5% of the actual pressure. That is, if your engine is putting out an actual 40 psi, your gauge will read 25 psi. So it is somewhat better than an idiot lite.

If you haven't noticed yet, it is a bear to get to the sender to remove, install or hook up the wire with the engine in the car. You have to remove the whole floorboard and it is still a contortion act.

I bought a 4" copper nipple (pipe) and a female/female adapter from Ace Hardware to raise the oil sender up to a point where I could get to it within the engine compartment. If you do that and are removing or installing the engine, remember to remove the sender so the nipple does not get bent.

Actually, 1942 Ford & Mercury oil gauges were 50 lb units
1946 began 80 lb units.

Post #8... Mike, is that right? The Jeep sender works on the same principle as Ford? If so, I probably have one in my 'stash'. Free, if I can find it.

RESULTS:

I ordered the sending unit Mike in AZ recommended and it works with a 1/4 MIP x 1/8 MIP hex bushing.

I was able to easily remove the old sending unit with a 1 1/16 deep socket (I think a metric one will work better) and with the hex bushing it sits a little higher and is very easy to install
Thanks for your help guys!!!
