I would be wary at that price.

That's a super duper deal if it's good. Of course, you would have to go there and "mike" it yourself. I bet the shipping alone would be about $100.

Re: merc crank on craigslist

Question for everyone. Is "1CM" as pictured in Pete's post #3 the definitive ID for a Merc crank? I have what I believe to be a Merc block that looks to be in good shape by the eye and several cranks. I'd like to find out if one of those cranks is for that block. I believe the block is a 39-42. It has markings on it and a "99" stamped on it. I can post pics if anyone is interested. Looking to sell.

Just eyeballing the picture it looks to have the large cleanout plugs, and if its been ground already its a good buy.

I believe that "1CM" designates a crankshaft from '51 up that has provision for the "Merc-O-Matic" transmission. The earlier crankshafts would be marked "8CM".

Re: merc crank on craigslist

There are a few different 4" cranks out there. Some of the Canadian 4" cranks have a "kidney bean" dimple on the front throw, so there are few different ways to tell. Easiest and surest way to tell is if the heavy bob weight is slightly over 6". If it's 5 1/2", its a 3.75" crank.

I was always told the 7/16" welsh plugs indicated 4" stroke. Have I been mislead ?

That is also a good way to tell. The counter weight measurement is the most absolute way to tell.

I would just measure the stroke

More like 5/8" ain't they?

And I think 3/8" on the 3.75" cranks.

It's hard to measure the stroke of a crank on the ground.

Correct. Large bob weight is the tell tale. Over 6", 4" stroke. Around 5.5", 3.75 stroke.

What part of "1CM" stamped on the counterweight don't you understand?

We're not just talking about this unit. Someone asked how to identify one out in the wild. We are just offering suggestions on how to do it.

Re: merc crank on craigslist

The CM part denotes a Merc crank. The block is the same as a Ford, and 49 to 53 are the years for the 4" stroke.
If that crank measures out and isn't cracked it is a great deal. :)
