Stuck 1930 steering wheel
 

My 1930's spark and throttle rods are extremely stiff, so I wanted to disassemble the steering column to check the bushing, etc. However, my steering wheel is apparently irremovable. I've got the M.A.C. wheel puller and a big wrench and hammer, but the wheel will not come off. The threads were already somewhat damaged, so I'm not too worried about the steering shaft, but I'd like to save the wheel. The tool actually has bent from the force I've exerted.

I would just cut off the shaft, but then I'd still have a useless steering wheel. Does anyone have an ideas? I don't have a machine shop or any way to press or grind the shaft.

I had the same problem getting the SW off. I drilled two holes one on each side of the steering shaft and threaded then. I then used a wheel puller to remove it.

Sounds like no matter how you grab the wheel you're going to need a better puller :o

You guys must bring good luck. The wheel popped loose with a huge bang and a spray of oil, but without damage, after four days of penetrating oil and so much pressure that the bottom plate of the puller was bent into a pretty good "V". Anyhow, thanks for the support.

I made a tool to pilot down into the top of the steering shaft with a ledge to apply the pressure to the tube. I use a fairly large size bearing splitter on the bottom edge of the wheel and a 10-ton bar puller that attaches to the splitter. It is good for model A types.

A regular steering wheel puller will work if there are threaded holes in the wheel hub.
