Sears Allstate tires?

Does anyone know when Sears Allstate safety tread tires were produced? My 19" say NYLON. I see SP-31971-3 on the back side opposite the white wall.

Probably from the 50s to the 70s. I have a set of Garfield tires on my 27 Model T. The previous owner bought them somewhere NOS. They still have nubs and are surprisingly not as hard as a rock.

I got my car in 2018 and it had been restored in 1985 and had Allstates. They looked good and I didn't replace them until 2016 when they started to have cracks.

Mine was also a mid-80s restoration and it had an Allstate spare when I got it.

They were a popular economy tire back in the early years as stated above. I always say They wear like iron, but drive like hell compared to Firestone or Goodyears .

You do have to realize they dry rot too and the are probably 40-50 years old at this point. Would you put 50 year old tires on your other cars? The treads do separate and come loose on them.
Have to say pretty incredible that they have lasted as long as they have. To bad other stuff today typically doesn’t. Happy Model A Motoring ! Get the A out this weekend. A few of our 160-B tour photos…

Thank you all. I figured they are probably pretty old despite their excellent condition. I will see how they last for this year and plan to replace next year. Great pics Larry, thanks for sharing.

I found 6 Allstate 19” to use as rollers on my project
The 2 spares had never seen the road
An inner tube had a date of 1976
The 2 spares did have a slightly wider white wall

I ran Allstate tires on my first Model A in the 1960's. They lasted a long time and were on the car when I sold it 10 years and many thousands of miles later.

My spare tires still have the nubs on the outside diameter road tread, never seen the pavement.

If you are determined to use them you should restrict them to parades! In my opinion they are dangerous and should be replaced now not next year. Wayne

Re: Sears Allstate tires?

Those Allstates will last until the tread is completely gone. They are tough Nylon cord.

Re: Sears Allstate tires?

The tire isn't going to just fling apart unless it has a giant crack in it. The tube condition is far more important when it comes to that.

Re: Sears Allstate tires?

We have Bedfords (same tire) and they are Rayon.

Ugly as sin but they refuse to quit. And they have to be from at least 1972.

I don't run them down the highway though strictly putting around town. No cracks or separation on any of them.

Re: Sears Allstate tires?

I looked at a set of roller only Sears Allstate tires that I have and they are dated 31981 so they made them longer than I thought.

It seems like Ward's Riverside tires were being reproduced by Lucas in the A sizes but I think they only have the model T sizes now.

Interesting, any idea on date? May keep these as rollers as well.

Re: Sears Allstate tires?

No ideas other than March 1981. I purchased the car they came on in 1988 or 89 and they still looked pretty good back then. They have flat spots and weather cracking now but are still good to roll a frame or car around while working on it in the shop. I put new tubes in them when they go south. They are stiff when prying off the rim but still hold a shape that will roll OK. I wouldn't want to take them out on the road.
