What is this rim from?
 

I have a couple of rims, 15" x 5" wide and the good old 5 on 5-1/2" bolt circle. They have "nubs" on the INSIDE of the center stamping for the hubcaps to snap INTO and I'd like to find another. I don't want one with spring clips or one with the "nubs" on the outside of the center stamping that the rims snap onto. If any of you could tell me the year and make that this rim was made for, I'll stand a better chance of finding one. Thanks!

47-48 Mercury and some 48 Fords. Have some in Oregon, but avoid shipping if possible. Look at lug nut holes- there are 'innies' for short lug studs, and 'outies' for the postwar long studs. Example looks to be an 'outie' Newc

Newc ....I THOUGHT that all of the '48s were still 4-1/2" wide. The '53-'56 pick-ups came equipped with 15 X 5" wheels (BETWEEN the beads) that still had the INSIDE nubbys for the older hub caps. They're still fairly common at swap meets.

Edit: OK, found it on the HAMB and it's what I need! And, it's in Columbus OH but I'm in NJ. Fortunately, my granddaughter just graduated from high school AND SHE'S GOING TO OHIO STATE! Now, HAMB says that I can't post on his thread, that I have to contact him directly. HOW DO I DO THAT?

The 15X5 outies are abundant at the swap meet. In the 1950s and '60s, these wheels swept the replacement world on older fords, replacing the 16s. Now the 16s have made a comeback. The trendy look of cars is toward tall along with the rodding world. My hotrod may go toward narrow 18s, but that's just me. Tire availability follows these trends. Good Luck: Fred A

Not sure I would call 16" rims a trend. They've been in vogue since '35.

Has anyone ever measured the real difference between a 4.5" & 4" rim? I had both on the garage floor. The actual difference is less than 1/4". It's almost hard to tell when they are side by side.

I'll stick with trend, especially considering that Ford went to 15" in 1942 on both the Mercury and Zephyr/Continental. Lincoln used the then trendy, 6" wide 15s. The Lincoln wheels were distinctive in the yards by not having ears for small caps. At 6" wide, all kinds of belted tires could be accommodated. After the war the passenger cars widely went 15", leaving the 16s to pickups/commercials. It is all there in the service bulletins. The wheel world continued to shrink in the mid-fifties to 14", and then we saw 13" on the compacts by the end of the decade. As you can see this a gross generalization. I hope my 18" Model B wheels become trendy. Good Luck: Fred A

Ford pickup wheels up through 1966 all take the small hubcaps that use the inner bumps. You need to be somewhat careful when you buy them as they have different widths and offsets.

I have also Been looking for one of those 15 x 5 rims. Pretty pretty much went through all my local sources and nobody has one.
I hate to pay the shipping but I’ll have to start looking elsewhere.
If anyone has a line on another one, let me know. Anything on the West Coast would probably be easier to ship.

Beyond the cost of shipping is finding someone who will pack them up to send. We are totally spoiled down south where there are two spaps/month worth going. The young rodders at the LA Roadsters brought out 15x5s but looked rough overall. The young guys have a different pricing thing where it is tough to anticipate. I was buying wheels, 16X5 single at $50 and 16X4.5, also $50, both superb. Dog meat 15X5 often over $75. Why would I even ask? The different offsets are handy to clear fat tires. Some of the truck wheels are 5.5 wide. Better for wide tires.

These are the 15" X 5" wide, '53-'56 pick-up wheels that we put on our 'driver' '37 Coupe ('40 drums on the cable brakes) to be able to run tubeless radials. Car is absolutely stock except for these drums/wheels. Coop

You have to be careful with the 5 1/2 wide rims. On certain cars (usually 35-40) the offset will put them too close to the stock shocks and the tires will rub the shock arms. Found this out the hard way many years ago on a '39 coupe I owned. The nut holding the shock link at the end of the shock arm cut a groove on the inside of the tire.

TJ, Do you mean the Front or rear, or both? I'm looking at 5" wide 16s with Houdailles. I have to check the difference in offsets between the 1941 Merc/Zephyr wheels and the pickup 16X5 (outies) that came later. With possible 6.50 or possible 7.00 size rear tires, I could be in trouble.
