8BA piston
 

I have a 94 year old friend who’s 1950 convertible has a piston with a hole in the top of it. He’d like to be able to replace just that one piston with the engine still in the car. He has been unable to find just one piston. The vendors he has talked to offer to sell him 8 pistons and 8 sets of rings. They were unable to split a package, and sell just one. Maybe someone would be willing to sell him a used .060 oversize piston with rings still on it. Please advise if you can help. Thanks. Sid

I may have a new one for $15. I will check later today if you are interested. Not sure about the rings.

I was reassembling my 8BA and the last piston was cracked. I looked all over for 1 .030 over. Amazon had one Sealed Power for $76 but Finditparts had is for $43. I ordered it and a few days later a box of 8 standard pistons showed up. They credited me and I could keep the pistons. They said I could reorder and I added a note about the "30" part of the p/n. They responded the next day that the .030 was out of stock and they refunded my money again. I ended up buying on Amazon and low and behold I got the whole box of pistons. I just checked for .060 and they didn't have any. but 2 weeks later a box of .030 arrived from my cancelled order from the finditparts.

If piston & rings other than the hole is Ok as well as the bore not damaged in the cylinder of that piston it can be tig welded. Just don’t sand blast or grind the hole. Use a metal burr to clean up prior to weld.

Post a picture of the hole as tig welding may be out of the question. That welding option is easier said than done especially in the car. By the sounds of it the hole size needs to be determined. What caused the hole? I have been tig welding foe 30+ years with a inverter welder and you will have a hell of a time completing that challenge.

I’ve suggested the tig welding to my friend, and he was going to talk with an experienced welder he knows. I personally think the best option is to replace the piston. I dug around in my used flathead parts and found 40 over pistons and 90 over, but no 60 over. Surely someone has one. A new one would be great as well. Thanks, Sid
