The Town car was about tripple the cost. No wonder there are not many of them.

After late 1929 no one of good conscience wanted to be seen being driven in any make chauffeured vehicle. That party was over.

I have a 1928 Tudor. The cash equivelant in todays dollar would be $8,313. Just sayin'...

Yep, that is what killed the premium brands like Packard, Peerless, and Dusenburg.

People think a little recession today is a big deal. In perspective they have no idea. It's mazing the things that people did just to get by. My car was built in March of 1928. I always wonder if it ever got reposessed, of if the original owner had to sell it because they needed the cash.

To be able to see in the dealership the day your car was delivered new.

To look thru the windshield and 'see' their world.

My dad used to tell about how in the early thirties they would take an entire wagon load of corn to the local elevator (in Hillsdale, Illinois) and get $1.00 for it.

My dad grew up a preacher's son in the 30's. Which means they had lots of vegetables, a few chickens, and very little cash show up in the offering plate. Grandpa cut hair on the side to help pay the bills. Dad talked about walking 2 hours to get to the cotton patch, chopping cotton all day for 2 dollars on a bologna sandwich, then walking home 2 hours. Everyone hitched a ride, but they were few. He made friends with a WWI vet who had a horse drawn wagon working the same patch. He said he felt like he hit the lotto! You didn't go to the dr. for the sniffles, hell you didn't go at all. He said if turpentine, iodine, or a mustard plaster didn't get you well, then you were a goner. My Great-grandpa cut the sidewall out of old tires and put them on over a new set. You had to make slow turns or you'd throw them off.

Yes, we have no concept about how bad is was, or how bad it CAN be.

Agree with ETAModel. His story is not much different from my grandparents who were market gardeners. My grandmother ran a few chooks and sold a few to the locals. The two of them would work all day harvesting a wagon load of vegetables, He would take a short nap, then leave for the long trip by horse drawn wagon to the market held early the next morning. He might sell a corner out of the load for next to nothing. It was not a direct trip home again afterwards. In the days before the depression, he would sell the whole lot and on the way home, go by the big stables at the top end of the city to load the wagon with horse manure for the garden. Next day, the manure was spread and preparations made to sow the next crop. Once the depression hit and he couldn't sell much, he took home what manure he could get on the wagon and plough it AND the beautiful , fresh vegies he couldn't sell into the ground. It was heart breaking to see all that work ploughed in. I remember my father who was 6-9 years old at the time telling me about it but I didn't fully understand what they went through. I do now and I have a new respect for their efforts in the face of hardship.
Our dinner plate always had lots of vegetables and very little meat. My wife's family were sheep farmers. Their dinner plate was plied with meat and maybe some vegetables.
They all did what they had to do to survive. I marvel at their tenacity.

Apparently car prices held pretty steady in those years. My Dad bought a new '32 Model B standard coupe for under $500, if he had bought a spare tire from Ford it would have been over $500, but he could buy one cheaper from the Firestone store that he bought his truck tires from.

I have used turpentine for a cut. When I was younger I told people of that, and they thought I was nuts. GENE (1960 model)
