shipping a head
 

I would like to ship a model A cylinder head to my brother about 350 miles away. Could someone give me an idea on how to crate it and what's the best way to ship it.
I'am in Calif. he's in Oregon. Thanks for your advice, Bill

When I purchased a high compression head it came in a very heavy cardboard box that was then placed in an additional cardboard box. The box was the size of the head. I would think you could make a 2x4 wooden frame and attach plywood to it and it would be better protected. Expect to pay around $50 or so.

Could he find one locally for less than or about the same as the cost of shipping?

Greyhound is a real good idea, just be aware, my greyhound closed for good up the st and it was a good sized terminal.
also understand that Fastenal isnt shipping at this time.......dont know if that is true or not.

Put a 1 by piece of lumber each side. Heavy gauge cardboard box.
Ship fedex, doubt $50 will get it there …maybe $75!
No greyhound for me.

A used stock Model "A" cylinder head is only worth $25 to $35.

I would build a plywood box and pack it in foam or bubble wrap to keep it from bouncy around too much. If its under the weight limit you can ship it ups or fed ex. If its too heavy fed ex ground. My wife just sent a hand bag in a small cardboard box less than 150 miles and it cost $25!!! I doubt $75 will cover the shipping.

I just shipped a head yesterday.
Thin plywood box with thick bubble wrap.
Cost $130 From CA to ND.

agreed, not worth shipping. buy one local. why not see if someone on the Barn, near your brother has one. they are worth no more then 50.

350 miles, that's only a 5 or 6 hour drive, go and have a good visit w/your brother, stay overnight, or 2 or 3.

I ship heads regularly, just in a cardboard box. I re-enforce the bottom of the box by gluing in another piece of cardboard to hold the box together. My head weighs about 28 lbs. ready to ship. I've shipped 90 and have had only one problem with box failure, lost a few studs is all. My head fits snugly in the box, I put a loose piece of cardboard at each end of the box, no other problems, and I have shipped UPS and USPS overseas.

Exposed wood, FedEx charges extra, maybe UPS too. Snyders ships their heads in a double thick cardboard box. The bigger the box you start might get in to size weight, not actual weight if it goes over combined length width height. USPS is 1728 CI. I would have to look up UPS and FedEx, but don't think it is much bigger than USPS now before it makes the jump in price.

USPS has a fixed rate “board game” box. It ships for large box price. About $20. That’s what I used to ship a head.

I suggest Greyhound as well. They will cost less. All depends on what kind of service they have between you and him.
