1932 Ford Alternator options I have a 1932 Ford B with Cragar head that has been converted to 12V and I'm looking for alternator options.
I see that Powermaster Performance make an 12V alternator in stock appearance for the Model A. Would this work for the B Motor? Product: Powermaster 82001 - Powermaster PowerGEN Alternators What are my alternator options that retain a semi stock or period appearance. |
Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options I don't know why it wouldn't work. The mount is basically the same for both the Model A & B. Here is a link to the description sheet:

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options What's your reasoning for wanting to change to an alternator?

If Powermaster alternators are anything like the Powermaster 12 volt starter I had in my 8ba, run away. The starter was a POS. JMO |
Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options Powermaster's in general do not have much of a fan club around here. I've not any, but search some old threads for some sad story's.

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options Another vote for Whitney. He converted mine 16 years ago, and it's still going strong. I sent him the end plates only, and he did the rest.

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options FWIW. Saw this guy on Jay Leno's garage. He puts an alternator inside your stock generator housing. Doesn't cost anything to inquire. He advertises monthly in Hemmings.

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options Thats intersting tom, wonder what he is using for the guts. When I talked to Tom whitney, he would not tell the secret of what they use. I asked if its common stuff that an alternator shop would be able to replace years down the road he assured me yes, its common stuff. Many folks theorize its a Kubota unit, they are small. As 4dford above states, they only need the end plates (Talkin v8's here) and the center section is a new part, aluminum, and slightly larger in diameter to the original gennie. You would not know on first glance. The next problem is the front bearing on the units that hold a fan. Powermasters, and stock delcos have been known to break off and send a fan thru the hood. Whitney told me thats not a problem with they're product, but I dont know what they have goin on there. mine only has about 5 k miles on it, so no bragging rights yet. Coopman here made his own, I forget the details, but it has been posted here if you are a do it yourselfer

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options Cas I'd guess it's not really a secret. More about someone that is willing to do it and make a good product. Guess it's a question of what you want to get into. Better mouse trap as they say.

Re: 1932 Ford Alternator options Years ago I made 9 6 volt alternators using 39 shells and
nippendenzo 12 volt small tractor alternator parts. I purchased the parts from Chestnut Hill Electric Motor Supply in Denver, Pa. I also used a 24 volt comutator so it would putout max powrer at idle at idle with a standard size 39 Ford pulley. I installed a bridge rectifier and variable voltage control to set the voltage at idle speeds. This was over 10 years ago and have had no failures and they all still work good. G.M. |
