Jailbar Ranch

My son and I were moving vehicles around this afternoon while cleaning out some sheds. I decided it would be a good afternoon for a line-up. They all started up perfectly and are ready for the open road. Plan is to get caught up with our work load and head out for a Fall road trip..... Now to get caught up.......

The sets of the 'teeth' are getting very expensive. Chrome repros are many hundreds of dollars. The 'teeth' are specific to location. Newc

I’m seeing the likelihood of needing to add a second Tonner as a bed and fender donor. Can’t have just one. Stu

I'd call it "Jailbar Heaven". In 1960 a friend had a 46 p/u with a "full race" 59A in it & chrome stacks. I have loved Jailbars ever since. Thanks 4 sharing GB !

A 46 I am working on for a widow:
Just did my annual maintenance thing and got a new inspection sticker. She keeps it in a garage (heated) and gets driven by only me for 100+ miles per year. I will take it out next month to check the steering. It wanders down the road.

But if you're a cabinet maker you make them out of wood, right GB?

All of these teeth are factory ford, but let's just say I HAVE considered wood on occasion. Thanks to all for the nice comments. I know they aren't as desirable as a lot of the prewar models, but jailbars have remained within my budget and seem to land here. I have enough parts trucks in my lower 5 acres to build another nice tonner PU with an H six, perhaps a stakebed. The six is on a rolling cart in my shop and was pulled by a friend's father from a half ton panel after a minor crash. I hear the H is a good engine.

I spent most of four days at Iola this past week and found precious few parts for Jailbars. A couple hoods is all. I shoulda bought one of them but didn’t. Kick my self now. I guess it’s just a fact, as you alluded to, they find you. Stu

Tom McCahill of "Mechanics Illustrated" liked 'em. Here's what he said :

“When it comes to breaking fast from a traffic light or snap passing on the highway, the Six can make the V-8 look as loggy as your Aunt Tillie after a hard day’s shopping in Macy’s bargain basement,” wrote Tom. Regarding mid-range performance, he said: “The Ford Six can tear the ears of the V-8 in acceleration and performance, right up to 75 mph.” But “Above 82 or 83 mph, the Ford six flattens out like a Chinese pancake… it finally lays down and dies at about 91 or 92 mph tops.” The Ford Six proved to be economical, too, by winning its class in the Grand Canyon economy run.

He sure had a way with words.:D

I find it interesting that only one (I think) has escaped major mods: Woodie body, Diesel transplant, Toyota transplant. But, they're all neat, especially the modifieds.
