Leaf spring eye bolt '51 Merc

I'm putting new leaf packs (McVeighs) on my 51. I didn't know that the front leaf spring hanger bolt is a forged rivet that needs to be wrecked and replaced. A replacement bolt is not easy to find on the internet. In fact info on this is pretty light in my research. Anyone here ever weld the original on back into the hanger bracket?

Replaced my springs years ago.
As I recall, after removing the nut, soak the inner and outer areas with penetrating oil.
Then the bolt gets driven or pressed out from the threaded end.
As I recall the bolt is an assembly that has a large attached washer on the outer end.

If you have access to a lathe you can make those bolts. That's what I did. You might be able to modify a standard bolt if it has a long enough shank size.

I imagine that it might be necessary to destroy one or two to get them out. They can get pretty crusty. I would check with Southside Obsolete for the 8M-5630-A or 0M-5630 shackle kits.

Thanks for the replies. I've got everything apart except this bolt. Not very crusty.
So the washer on the threaded end comes off and then drive the bolt out like kind of like a modern wheel lug stud?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6d9735dc24.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f0d77507ed.jpg

Believe the washer stays in place.
Protect the threaded end and drive/press it out.

I was able to find those bolts NOS for my 53 Customline.
I think from Carpenters.

Well damn. I searched using Bing and Google, and that never came up as a result. Thanks again. I'm ordering them.

The 8A part number will fit the Fords and later 52/53 Mercury but I don't know if it will fit the 49 through 51 Mercury. The 49/51 Mercury cars had it's own part number 8M-5780-A. The length or pin diameter may be different. The 1949/51 Mercury also has its own bushings by part number.

General spring shows shackle kits for 49/51 Merc but no photo. Jamco Suspension sells the rear spring front single pin kit. They do a lot of custom stuff for Mercs.

FCRC machine also sells them and may be the manufacturer.

I got one side off. This bolt is useable as is. It was a bit of a struggle getting it out. The bushing was all swelled up from the squaw piss (P.B. Blaster).https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d34742ccd3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6fac2222bf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6bd6d8749d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6539ca5ff4.jpg

Good work. If you ruin the other one getting it out, you have a pattern from which to build a replacement. (When I was a kid, we made stuff like that from standard hardware store parts, my old man's drill press, and a couple of files.)

Absolutely! I did order a couple from Mac's though. But by the time they get here I'll probably be rolling again. I am a lathe machinist by trade so making one wouldn't be a big deal but for $25 I figured I'd spend my lunch break eating lunch. Lol
