If anyone has an old vintage clamp on style external thread repair tool that I can use to repair the 5/8" - 18 threads on a '29 rear axle shaft that they would sell please let me know.

I'm not sure what kind of toll you're looking for, I'm confused which is kinda normal.

Have you tried chasing the threads with a die or thread file ?

that tool starts at 1/14" o.d. which is much too large. Model A axle is 5/8" But thanks for trying!

Make sure the problem is not with the nut. Try a new one.

Just curious why it has to be a clamp on style or split die? A “normal” die wont work?

Usually the damage is at the end of the axle so you need to start
near the hub where the threads are good and work towards the
damaged area.

Just a thought: I had to fix one myself, so I took an old axle nut and sawed it in half, then clamped it to the axle threads with a vice grip and backed it off the axle. Naturally one should clean up any burrs on the nut after sawing. The nut is hard enough to force the thread form back in shape. If it gets to a point where it is hard to turn, take the two-part nut off, clean everything up and start again. This might save you the cost of a rethreading tool.

I did much the same as Bud to repair my threads on my axle but I bought a grade 8 nut from Tractor Supply and sawed it in half using a Dremel cut off wheel. The nut actually cut threads. I did not debur the inside of the nut so it was nice and sharp.

I have that tool that I got from Don. You are welcome to borrow it. Should fit in a USPO flat rate envelope so shipping to and from should be under $20.

Send me a message if you'd like to borrow the tool. I won't be able to get it out to you until Wednesday at the earliest. We've gotten hammered with snow.

Can't go wrong with getting one from Don as well. Great tool to have and it will save your hide in jams like this.

The other clamp on repair tools shown above work the same way, from the inside out.
