Intake gasket failure

Ive noticed now on 2 seperate engines that im having an issue of the outside of the heat riser holes tearing away from the intake gasket. Is this a common issue or should I be looking for a cause? Both planes are square and intakes were true. I used white grease all over the gasket. Im sure this could also be a reason i was having such an issue tuning the carbs if air can get into the intake from there?

Never ran in to this problem. I would say it is rare.

Re: Intake gasket failure

My recent 255 Merc build did the same. Intake gasket was from a "Best Gasket" full set and was a two layer paper construction. It tore at the holes you refer to and also separated and migrated inward at the rear, causing an oil leak there.
I fixed the problem by using a gasket like Mike Driskill at 3rd gen (35fordtn) sells...it has a metal center sandwiched in it and is far better construction. I highly recommend it.
