42 1 1/2 Ton Truck Steering wheels .

Horn button retaing guts on my truck missing , i bought a 1940 wheel and thought i would remove the centre button mounting and fit to my wheel as it looked in better condition , managed to get the metal cup out off wheel but it will not fit my wheel ,it seems my wheel contains more material with a step so the cup can not sit down , i could fit the locking ring on top of this material but i would have to split it from the Cup and then glue it in place somehow .Did they do away with the cup sometime to save material but not being as secure is why my horn button is lost ? Both wheels are 4 spoke truck type , any ideas .

The parts book shows the same steering wheel, spring and button for
1940-47 Trucks.

I dont think the cup is meant to come out ,so if my wheel was compleate the button and spring would swap over ok ,i was wondering did they just economise on material during production keeping the same part numbers on a different built wheel ,after all everything else is interchangable ,the puzzle is they both look original and unmodifed my wheel just has the retaining part missing to lock the button in place .

Military ones are different but the civilian ones should be the same. The military wheels don't have hard rubber covering the centers but only on the grips so they are a lot different.

Hi Guy's ,fettled my wheel to take centre for button ,i will fit this tempary and have the wheel i got of the web reconditioned some time ,it is in much better shape , does anboy know when threading the cable down the colum should there be extra protection like a sleeve where it comes out of the seering box or would that just make it rub more ?

I know clever Fellas designed these things and i just want to go back to original.

I can not find anything on drawings just the wire.

no sleeve actually comes out but some trucks do have a sleeve made of plastic that protects the wire from road junk. threading down the tube can be a bear--I usually take a small 18 gauge stiff wire and push it up the column from the steering box end and use this to pull the wire down thru the tube
