Can I save this engine?

Another one of my Flathead videos of those strange lucky dip war time motors, you never know what size they are or if they have iron pistons etc till they are apart,

I might be able to bore this +60.

Ruddi, That is possibly a good candidate for boring out big. I've built them from cores very similar condition. Good luck

It looks do-able to me. I'm lucky to have a boring machine though.

Great find. Keep us posted on its condition.
Have fun.

If the video tells the whole story, I can't believe how easily that head came off! That has got to be a good sign.

Gavin was saying he had +120 pistons I think, it might even clean up at +60, I put my tractor and a motorcycle on trademe and when they sell I will take an engine to a shop and get them do do the whole thing.

Just pulled the intake gasket off and this motor has an adjustable lifter

Just get the shop doing the work to not only crack test it, but also sonic test the cyl wall thickness, before you buy pistons etc. Get an indication as to how much meat there will be...

Yes that would be a good idea, I will still build that other merc with the one sleeve I think as I have all the bits but I hoped to get a block witch was 100% mint, but I don't think I will find one.

I took the sump off, going to use another block but will save all this.

Do you know if it has already been over bored? If it has, I doubt it will clean up with just a 0.060" over.

Its STD bore, its a real shame because there is zero lip on the bore and it would have been a good motor

Re: Can I save this engine?

Since you got it all apart, it may be a good block - who cares how rusty all the parts were that came out of it. Since it is a 40 Merc 239, it is a very desirable block for a larger overbore. I wish you could just magically send it to me - as I have a 40 Merc that needs a good block to build from!
