Shipping a Columbia
 

I recently bought a Columbia axle which is 500 miles from me. I am trying to figure out the best or cheapest way to ship it. Any experience out there doing this? Basically Sacramento to San Diego.

I used engineshippers.com a few times and they were about 1/3 the price of the big carriers.
They shipped a '34 rear axle to me in Calif from Idaho for 200 bucks a while back.
With gas as lo as it is right it might be better to make the trip and pick it up.

Roads are empty, price of gas is way down --- If you can't get a good shipping price :

A road trip sounds great but we are all under "Stay at Home" rules in CA
with a fine of $1000 if your trip is non essential.

Anybody know how much a Columbia weighs (without controls) so I can price shipping.?

is it a complete rear with torque tube----or just "columbia" as as shipped from factory(one housing,with internals, no banjo,ring gear,axles)---size is a factor too

Just the Columbia (R/H) axle assembly. No ring and pinion or other banjo pieces but all the parts to bolt on the Columbia and no controls.

I bought a 36 one at Hershey, it had been shipped on a cheap handtruck, bolted to it--I could weigh the pieces, think 100 lbs is in the range, might be in ups shipping weight range
i could weigh a later housing too, wont be able to post till later in night

if you drive to get it, you will be helping to stop the spread of the virus by keeping all the hands off of it at the various shipping terminals and truck drivers. chp is actually looking for people?

You have to be able to come up with a valid excuse for the trip (as if getting your new Columbia home isn't a good one).

Call your Fastenal store and ask about it. If it is just the rearend you can strap it on a pallet and they will ship it to there nearest store to the receiver.

It won't even be 100 lbs if it is just the Columbia portion and no ring gear or axles - my guess about 75 or so. Since you don't have the whole rear axle, you might try Fastenal and have them strap it to a pallet (like an engine) . . . would probably be at a reasonable price.

Forward Air is pretty cheap and fast if both ends are near a major airport.

Last I heard Fastenal is only shipping there own stuff no 3rd party orders.

????? I'm in ca, and I've never heard of that one. Stay at home??? 'Course, I don't have a TV, and I don't get any regular news. So, I'm never troubled by what comes out of Sac. If that's the rule, I've been breaking it. I'll have to ask my chp friends about this.
(And, BTW, I have made the socal to Sac run recently. And, didn't see any 'enforcement'.) (Was also out yesterday. It seemed that traffic was 'as usual', meaning heavy and bogged down in the usual places.)

The order is in place by the governor but I have no idea if its being enforced. Traffic on I5 is very light up and down the state.

UPS ground delivered to your door restrictions are: 100 lbs max, 8' long max. 500 miles away you would have it in 3 days. I continue to stress proper packaging to avoid damage, and yes the weight of the packaging counts.

Also should be less than $1OO. Likely in the $70 to $80 range, maybe less being that close. My apologies for not including that in the other post.
