I have had it boys...I am done with this... I am done with this standing in front of a wire wheel cleaning up nuts, bolts and lock washers and all the little things dinging up my fingers and who knows what.
Sand blasting is ok but not. So, on the suggestion of a fellow Model A'er I spent $10.00 for a gallon of Muritic Acid and did some tests. Put some acid in a jar along with some heavly rusted steel nuts and bolts, left them in for about 1-1/2 hours and they came out very nice. Put them in water to nutrulize the parts, let them dry then put them in this divice I got from Harbor Freight which is a vibrating bowl with some media. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE LABEL AND HAVE GOOD VENILATION! Pluck PS...Can't get rid of me that easy! |
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Evapo-Rust would be much less harsh on your skin, lungs, and the environment, and do the same thing. The stuff really works and you use it over and over, rather than disposing.
But I'm with you. Drop the rusty stuff in a bin and walk away. Using Chemicals for Better Living! http://www.harborfreight.com/1-gallo...ver-96431.html http://www.harborfreight.com/media/c...image_3573.jpg |
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Hey pluck now drop them in some phosphoric for a half hour and rinse with water and Dry they wont rust for a long Time. I have a fender hanging in the barn for over 8 months that was bare metal that I treated with phosphoric And is still bright and waiting for me to finish and prime.

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner, cleans rusty bolts quit well.
|
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Steve,
What are you using for Media? The next thing you need is a vibrating bed from a hotel...then you could do fenders, wheels, quarter panels and such. |
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... And then there's electrolysis - several of my tractor friends have used it for everything from small parts to fenders.
|
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Denis, What do you have to do to prep the metal for primer?
|
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... I just sand and blow the dust off with compressor wipe down with cleaner and prime
|
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Steve
Mort has gallons of phosphoric acid,I"m sure he would give you some Ive had Muratic bleed through later on.especially if there is moisture Tom |

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... I use a lapadary tumble and lots of small parts for the matrix. About 3 hours in soapy water and the parts and clean and shiny.

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... I use vinager

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Muriatic acid is a commercial grade (that means impure) of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) in water. It is nasty stuff, like Fordgarage said. Assuming you don't hurt yourself, I would worry about a simple water rinse being sufficient before painting. Water will dilute but definitely won't "neutralize" it. I would be concerned about residual amounts of it continuing to eat away under the paint.

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Where did you acquire the carbon rods for the electrolytic rust removal?

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Ok. Found some Carbon Electrodes on Ebay (of course). Not expensive either.
|
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... I like the electrolytic method as well. It has been my experience that this method works best with multiple electrodes around the perimeter as it is most effective when the path between the part and the electrode is a straight line.
Using the muriatic acid was a big mistake at my shop. On two occassions an errant breeze made me inhale that stuff and I suffered for some time. Additionnaly, the corrosive residue began rapidly rusting nearby items that I did not want rust to be on. I eventually went to a vibratory tumbler. I dump my parts in it and let it run for 2-3 hours and my parts are very nice and clean. Then I rinse and apply WD40 until I am ready to work with them at a later date. |
Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Be warned, muriatic acid can cause hydrogen embrittlement in carbon and alloy steel, cast iron, some stainless steels and aluminum alloys. Hydrogen embrittlement can greatly diminish the strength of parts. For some parts this could present a safety concern.

Re: I have had it boys...I am done with this... Paint reducer to neutralize the muriatic acid we used in the shop [since 1980]with no problems since.. As someone said on Fordbarn before [NO lockwashers] they might crack and in some cases they did,,, to me before i knew....
