Oil Capacities...Which is it?
 

I was taking a look at several publications looking up "oil capacities" and see that they are all over the place OR there are some typographical errors.

Ford Service Bulletins:Page 227:

Transmission...1 Pint
Rear Axle...1-1/2 Pints

Ford Service Bulletins:Page 375:

Transmission...1 Pint
Rear Axle...1-1/2 Quarts (Typo?)

Les Andrew (Red Book):

Transmission...1-1/2 Pints
Rear Axle...2-1/4 Pints

Model A Instruction Book:

Transmission and Rear Axle...Pour sufficient lubricant in until it reaches the level of the filler hole.


Which is it?

Steve, I've been fooling with Model A Fords since 1971, and always went by the 'fill it until it starts oozing out of the fill hole' rule for rear ends and trannies and have never ever had an issue by doing that. I never paid any attention to the fill capacity.

Motor oil about 4 1/2 qts. that is what I drain out at oil change time and the fill level is on 'F'. Used to put in 5 qts. because that is what the owner's manual says. The beauty of the motor oil level is it will leak out until it finds it's sweet spot at least in the Model A's I've been around, rear main not leaking profusely anyway.

I agree with Werner. I spent a lot of time at the Ford garage as a kid and that's their method.

That's the method I've always used.
Think about it, if one can touch it w/their little finger there's still enough oil in there to be picked up by the gears and moved around to everywhere it needs to go.

Dyke's and the Ford Service Bulletins are in agreement:


The transmission should have one pint of gear oil. It has been my experience that more than one pint will leak onto the floor and likely be confused as a rear main bearing leak. One pint makes the oil level about halfway up the cluster gear.



The rear axle should have 1-1/2 pints of gear oil. This is enough oil to cover the teeth on the bottom of the ring gear.
