40 Ford serial # location... update

Found the serial number. It was way up front on top of front crossmember. It was right next to the two rivets along the very edge of the frame rail. Thanks to all for help.

On top of the cross member? I've never seen that.

Sounds fishy. Is there any damage to the top of the left frame rail that might have obliterated the original number? Are the numbers the correct font? Do they match the title? How about a picture?

Not on crosmember. On frame rail where the rivets attach to crosmember.

The numbers are clear and match the title.

For some reason the earlier years tend to be near the firewall and then migrate toward the crossmember as the years go by (but can be anywhere in a given year!). What a job, stamping numbers all day every day!!

What a job, stamping numbers all day every day!!......I can imagine some of the conversations on the line...” Hey Fred, is this number 151 or 152 ???”.......Mark

Both of my 41 pus have the number as described above, in line with the front crossmember, near the rivets. if you think about it, it would have been a good solid place to hit, the frame would have more bounce further back.

When I replaced the front crossmember I had to be careful not to damage the area where the number was, it was that close to the rivets.

That's why I don't like MII front ends, they cover up the number.

Oh, now I understand. In your earlier post you said
"It was way up front on top of front crossmember".

Anybody have a clue where they might be found on a 42-47 pickup ? I have the bed off and have sanded both rails to bare metal from back of cab all the way back to the end as well as from radiator to front of cab and find nothing. Do ya think it's possible it never got marked at all ?

Not sure about the 42-47 pickup as they have a different frame. The 48-52 F-1 pickups have the number stamped on top of the right frame rail near the front crossmember. Possibly the 42-47 pickups could be the same?

I've built dozens of IFS 35-40 chassis and I always let the customer take care of re stamping the numbers if needed.

Re: 40 Ford serial # location... update

passenger cars had number stamped in three places. one on frame rail near firewall or farther forward heading toward the crossmember depending on year. The other two places where considered the "secret" locations" that where father back on the rail, one being on top of the rear wheel arch. These where hidden by the body and used as security checks for stolen vehicles that had the visible front number altered. Removing the body would reveal the security check numbers. The pick up is considered a "commercial car" and was available as cab only cab only which left the top of the frame rail open for every one to see. If the second and third number stamping was provided , it would give away the two "secret" locations . Therefore the frame was not stamped in those two locations on all commercial cars. One way to tell a commercial car frame (besides measuring the thickness) is that it will only have the chassis number stamped in the forward position only. Passenger car frames have it stamped in all three places. Don't tell anyone about the secret locations , as they are Ford trade secrets!

my opinion
