What alternatives is there instead of anti-freeze to run in a Model A to stop corrosion?

Can you provide me with the names of the products please. A person told me they run a cap fill of drill cutting compound, any one tried this ?

I get mine at both Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts . Several companies offer this product . Gunk is the first brand that comes to mind . The counter people are usually helpful . I ask for water pump lubricant . The kind that I use comes in small bottles for five or six dollars per bottle . It also does a good job of stopping sound of a a squeaky water pump seal .

Has been frequently mentioned previously on the Barn, additionally I add a bottle of Red Line Water Wetter. Usually flush/backflush yearly.


As needed white vinegar or thermocure flush//backflush.


Winter storage drain water and fill with antifreeze, in spring drain antifreeze and save it for winter-reuse.

I have been told by more than one person who all should know that cutting oil will turn to jelly in the cooling system so I don't use it. I use an american product which gives great lubrication, rust resistance and is compatible with all antifreeze additives, not that I use any of those.
It's sold here branded as "Cyclo" Anti Rust & water pump lube and is made by Cyclo Industries LLC in Florida. Unlike most other soluble oils, it does not attack the hoses either. If I rub my fingers together after dipping one intot he coolant, I can feel the oiliness. You might gather that I recommend this stuff. Has anybody else used it?

I have never heard of Cyclo products (before now). They have many different products lubrication and corrosion. For years I've used distilled water and Water Wetter from Autozone. This winter we had a new NAPA store open in town and I went in to see what they had. They didn't carry Water Wetter, but their product is called NAPA Kool. It comes in a 16 oz. bottle and the number is 4056. It's a little more expensive but I'll give it a try this summer.

Naturally, I too have no idea where you can buy this stuff over there. They have many products and I've used several of them. All have been as good as any I have tried. Their penetrating lubricant is also as good as any - better than most. It's called "Break Away".
Maybe it's easier to buy them here than in the country where they are made!:confused: Maybe an oportunity here for some enterprising barner?

Thank you all for the replies. My thinking for the alternatives for Anti Freeze was to see if they don't cause the same gasket leakage issues as anti freeze. The Cyclo product is available in New Zealand, so I am keen to try.

I use a water soluble cutting oil, it Improves Wetting, Cleaning & Lubricating During Metal Cutting & Grinding; Prevents Rust & Corrosion.

I have used "water pump lube/anti rust" for years. For the last 10 - 12 years been using Sta -Lube brand Soluble Oil ( CRC No. SL2512) with good results. Says right on the label "For automotive and industrial cooling systems as a rust preventative". No jelling or hose problems to be seen. It is a soluble metal working oil, as far as I can tell it is the same stuff as the water pump lube/ anti rust except in much concentrated form. I believe that I purchased it at a NAPA store, came in a 1 quart jug.

Exactly!
When something works, and works so great, I never understood the need to search for an alternative. Love my 50% antifreeze in all my vehicles.


Old antifreeze and drain oil make great mouse killers in the 5 gallon bucket mouse traps.

I don't understand the fuss about using something other than antifreeze. I've used mostly Preston antifreeze for 57 years and never had one problem. I knew a man that heard that kerosene was a good alternative to antifreeze for short term use being it would swell the hoses after sometime. He was losing water from somewhere and didn't want to keep adding antifreeze so he was using kerosene. this was in an old 35 ford log truck and he blew a head gasket and totally burned the truck with a load of stave bolts to the ground. I think antifreeze is still the best.

50% antifreeze for me no problem with gaskets for the last 5 yrs since engine rebuilt,(15000 miles. )
