37 gas tank

Finally got around to pulling my 37sedan gas tank. Was expecting a big job but only took about an hour laying on my back. I have duel exaust so had to pull the very back pipe hangers. Have an early model so tank came out with threaded pipe in place. Just pushed the tank hard to the drivers side and it fell off the frame. Question is does the tank get painted black? Will get new tank from Joe’s Antique Auto in Uxbridge Ma. Will report when I try to reinstall the new tank. Regards,Don

Yes..........1937 Ford gas tanks were black.

Don,
Good that it came out easy, mine too was painless.
The gas tank was painted M-177 Black Frame Paint. It is a semi-gloss paint. It is documented in The 1937 Ford Book, page A-13, from the V8 club.
I buy most of my parts from Joe's. He and the girls there are really good, nice people. I have always had a great experience with them, his prices are excellent and shipping is quick. Shout out to Joe!
I, too, have the early threaded filler pipe (wish I had the later one). It is prone to leaking, has been my experience. Be sure to order a couple of the lead washers for the filler pipe seal. I used two of them and it still leaks, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I invested in a spanner wrench, specifically for the filler pipe notch spacing. It helps tremendously, and you don't have to bugger up the pipe by using some channel locks.
Let us know how it goes and if it leaks :)

Re: 37 gas tank

Thanks for the info on paint and the lead washer. I usually put a light coat of Titeseal medium on the threads of any threads that have a potential to leak. It not only seals but stays pliable for future removal and is gas and oil proof.
Happy turkey day to all.

Ah, good point about the sealer. I will tackle that next.
Thanks

Re: 37 gas tank

I believe it is not the threads that will be where it leaks. It will be the union of the filler neck to the tank opening, where the lead washer goes. As 1937sedandelivery said, he used two and it still leaks.

Re: 37 gas tank

When I did a '35 tank some years ago I used regular gas tank sealer on the lead seal and then installed the filler neck. I never leaked in all the years I owned it.

Re: 37 gas tank

I agree with you but thinking outside the box I figured if the lead leaks the gas has to somehow get by the threads to leak. Since there is no pressure I just figured putting Titeseal on the threads would prevent leaking on the ground. I sure could be wrong but building subs for many yrs. I was thought that overkill was the standard.
But that said I could very well be wrong. Lost count of how many times that has happened,
Regards,Don
