6v to 12v conversion for the 226
 

Hi Guys, Ive been playing around with the ideal of doing the 6v to 12v conversion 226 flathead ford. I know they make kits for the V8's . But what about the 226 ? or anyone have a list of the stuff I need to do it myself. Like which make and model Alternator would replace the genny.
or is doing the 6v to 12V even worth it ?

"worth it" depends on what you have in mind for the vehicle. If basically stock then just as well leave it 6v and get it in top-notch condition. If you are wanting to run a lot of add-on devices such as radio, gps, etc then a 12v conversion might be a good approach. The parts you need are basically the same ones you need for the v8. I have no idea on the alternator.

I have a 226 flathead in a 52 ford f2. I tried converting it to 12 volt and was unable to find an alternator that would charge the up the battery because the engine rpms are to low for it to charge the battery unless I was driving 35-50 mph. I was never able to find what size pulley to use to increase the speed for the alternator to start charging. I recommend using a generator converted to 12 volt that came stock on the truck. They will match the rpms with the charging needs of the battery. Or if you are able find the appropriate pulley size for an alternator.

I have a few non Ford vehicles, machines converted from 6 to 12 volt. I think they all use the GM Delco alternators. Most with the integral voltage regulator. Used the original pulley from the generator on the alternator so the belt fits good. Charges just fine soon as its off idle. International trucks.

I put the 12v coils in my gen and it works fine. changed bulbs and starter to 12v. There arent any acc to pull voltage, its just bulbs and ignition after its started

Heater blower motor maybe. Don't forget the resistors for the gauges and 12 volt coil. Also might need different voltage regulator for 12 volt system and fuel level sender.

I did forget about the voltage drop things for the gauges, my coil is a 12v too. I dont have a heater in mine, but yes it will have to have a 12v motor.

I posted up a detailed thread on the FTE forum but, for the 239. I decided to keep the generator to simplify things. I didn't add anything but A/C to the truck.


I just put 12 volt coils and armature in my stock case. Actually just swapped end plates and left in stock location.

My car was already previously converted to 12V.
This is the kit I used on my H-Series:

On the alternator kit I did have to modify it by adding a brace. It is a little weak and when I tightened my belt up it flexed the bracket.
I purchased the Pertronix Ignitor II kit (91261). I had to make a slight modification to get it to fit, but it works great.
Still using the stock starter.
