35 steering box removal
 

Hey fellas, just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to removing the box and column? I just purchased a rebuilt box and plan on doing it this weekend so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The steering box in your photo looks like a 37 to 48 box to me.

If the gear box is a '37 or later, hopefully it's a '37-40, the '41 and later are longer. The '37-40 would be a direct replacement for the '35 steering gears, however, you would need a '37-40 frame mount.
I would suggest taking the steering wheel off, removing the front seat cushion, removing the floor mat and floor board section around the column/peddles. Jack up the front end of the and put it on axle stands, disconnect the pitcut man arm and pull the steering gear assembly out the bottom..
The frame mount is riveted to the frame, top and bottom, the rivets are difficult to get to..
I have '40 Ford steering gears in my '36, installed them in 1955, can't really fathom having a pre '37 Ford with the original steering gears..
You will need to change the pitman arm, I'll have to look up the correct number for use in a '35-36 with later steering gear setup..

I just did one of these and managed to get the 35 /35 frame mount to work ok ,I will try and post more info .Ted

Some one has informed me that my idea cannot be done on a left hand drive car because of the curve in the Manifold for the dip stick .On a right hand drive its a breeze to do, changing that chassis bracket is no fun and I think it could affect the floor board

Using a '37-40 frame/chassis mount in lieu of the '35-'36 effects nothing other than making the installation of the later steering gears easier.
Pix attached showing '40 steering gear/mount in my '36.
Reviewing the pix you will note that the steering gear box is quite close to the stock '36 exhaust manifold.
Many years ago I tried to put headers on my 59AB engine. Had to do some serious alterations with a hammer on the center down pipe to clear the steering gears, gave up on that idea, went back to the stock '36 log manifold. Still have a near new set of headers hanging on the wall in my garage..

Yeah I’m hoping I don’t have any of those issues. The guy said he modified the box to fit without any issues.

How do I remove the horn cap from the steering wheel? Mine is upside down.

If you are talking about the horn button just disconnect the horn( unless you like to hear it) push the cap/button in & twist. Should twist CCW

Awesome thanks! Will I be able to turn the horn button the correct way so it’s not upside down or do I need to adjust something else too?

Which pitman arm should be used with the later steering gear when it is installed in a 35-36? There was a post some time ago that recommended modifying the earlier pitman arm to fit the later sector shaft, but the relevance of doing it that way was lost on me.
