How can I get a replacement registration Hi,
I'm looking to get a replacement registration / title for my 34 Ford 3-window. Are there still title companies that can do that? Thanks Earl in Va. |
Re: How can I get a replacement registration Try THE Titleman , 566 St. Paul st. Rochester NY. Ph. No. ..??? Depending on your state laws.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration The DMV in your state. Just give then your name and information they will issue a replacement.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration Are we talking new to you or just a replacement for one you lost? Everything depends on the state you live in, each state has their own laws and procedures.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration New to me. I've built a fiberglass kit car.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration That will require a "build" title I believe in most states. You have to gather up all your receipts for major components and most likely have the car inspected. I would bet if you go online and check the DMV site for your state they will list the requirements for a "build" title. Is the frame original or aftermarket? If original frame you can sometimes title to the frame number.

Re: How can I get a replacement registration Many MVD will not consider a title from a "mill" that makes them up. Getting a new title from the MVD is usually a very complicated process. We have a strict rule that we don't consider buying any vehicle without a "real" title. It opens the possibility that someone could show up and make a claim of ownership and take the vehicle. I have seen it happen. A "bonded" title is available in some states as protection. If someone makes a valid claim, they can only get the bond, not the vehicle.

Re: How can I get a replacement registration Insurance laws changing some years back added rebuilder titles to the home built or builder's title procedures. A person has to have receipts on main components for most procedures unless they are all home built but most folks don't home build an engine, transmission, or drive train. Fiberglass bodies are sold all the time and would only require a receipt. The frame would be a key point and would require a state approved and applied VIN unless it was a manufactured frame from a previously titled motor vehicle. If the frame was manufactured then the car would have to be titled for that frame's VIN with make and model year of the car it was from. It can get complex at times but it's not impossible.
Title services generally only provide a title for a manufactured motor vehicle and that may only be in the form of a registration from a state that does not recognize titles on older motor vehicles. There are new rules on what are called Replica motor vehicles and a person would have to check into the procedure for putting one of these together,. It is allowed in many states to do this and is very much like a builders title procedure. This covers cars like the replica Cobra and the replica early Fords and many others. You might want to google "The Title Man" and read some reviews about him. Seems a little shady with reviews complaining about wating 6+ months and getting nowhere. I live in the Rochester burbs and might just take a ride to the city and see this guy in person, but I have the feeling I'll need some hand sanitizer if I have to shake his hand................... |
Re: How can I get a replacement registration It came with an MSO from the dealer. This should help?

Re: How can I get a replacement registration Hey Earl, Welcome to the FordBarn Forums!
I have no answers or experience with your question, but here's a page with several links to Virginia Department Of Motor Vehicles and MSO's... https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C....0.IP4pGaH5EoQ |
Re: How can I get a replacement registration This would be a good question for the HAMB, sure there is a lot of experience with the required procedure over there. Also, there have been articles in Hot Rod mag over the years on this topic.

Re: How can I get a replacement registration From what I hear (at least in Minnesota), an "MSO" (Manufacturers Statement of Origin) should be a big help.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration Start by calling your State Motor Vehicle Office.
|
Re: How can I get a replacement registration A "regular" MSO is a legal document (that includes the VIN number) which the purchaser uses to obtain a title from the DMV.
That is how it worked with the new trucks and on-road equipment we sold. |
Re: How can I get a replacement registration Yes a MSO is like a title. All you need to to do is take that document to DMV and they will generate and issue you a title for your state. It is is simple as that.

Re: How can I get a replacement registration Every state DMV is different. In the New York City area it is pretty simple. Fill out about a dozen forms from the DMV and hope you got all the forms you need. Provide at least eight notarized affidavits from all prior owner's dating back 50 years. Next provide six pieces of identification all with pictures taken within the last three years. Make an appointment with the DMV so that the wait will only be about three hours and lastly, hope and pray you get a DMV agent that actually knows what they are doing and really care about your problem. I love NY.

Re: How can I get a replacement registration I believe in the State of Virginia you need to apply for a reconstructed vehicle title. Contact your local DMV and speak to them. I find it usually helps to speak to a supervisor as they are a little better versed on the rules. If memory serves me correctly you will have to bring the car to a DMV location and have it checked out and they will assign and attach a reconstructed vehicle serial number and issue you a title with the usual fees, of course.

It looks like it would fall under the replica vehicle procedure to me. |
Re: How can I get a replacement registration Yep, it's a modern world, online is your friend! I tend to not trust verbal answers unless I am positive they know what they are talking about. If you don't have it in writing it can change with the wind.
