37 Pick Up steering column drop
 

I have problem with the column drop in my truck, it appears to be in perfect condition apart from when I "lock" it, the steering lock works fine but the ignition switch can still be turned on. I am unsure if something is missing. Anyone have an exploded diagram? I've checked my green bible but it's not very clear.

Hi Gary - just realised who I was replying to..

When you "lock" it the ignition barrel should move a plunger towards the steering shaft. There is a spring loaded part which engages in a collar on the shaft and will lock the shaft. The movement of the plunger also locks out the switch so it can't be turned on.

Does the barrel seem to rotate freely between the off and on position, or does it have some resistance like it is moving something?

Someone may have removed the plunger. You need to be sure though, because if it is there, you don't want it engaging the shaft accidentally when driving along.

I might remember completely wrong but isn´t it the switch plate itself that keeps it from rotating in the locked position.
The sidemovement must be working since the column locks up.

Thanks for the replies. I am missing item 8 on the diagram, it looks the same piece as the earlier 32 one so I should have one somewhere.

I believe that the # 8 piece will only work if you have the lever that is like the '32.There is a slot that the tab fits into.The '36 & '37 column drops that I have had did not have that type of lever.Looks like you have a '35 column drop.A close up pic would help-hard to see with the pic you posted.'37's are a bit lower and angled back further than the 35-36.

I have not seen a diagram for the 37 but the 35-36 is close. The difference in function is minor. The 37 lock shaft has a key way cut in it that a pin from opposite the tumbler is pushed up into. The ignition switch is held in the locked position by a small pin that when the steering lock is unlocked moves relative to the switch to free up the switch handle. These pins wear or shear off and you end up with a switch that always works. I just dismantled mine and replaced the pin.
