i'm looking to buy a 1936 5 w coupe. it doesn't have the wide five pattern on the wheels. did ford sell these any other way? the owner says they were on it when he bought it in the 50's. they are 16x5 , i'll try and post a picture.

Looks like early '50's Merc wheels and '40-'48 drums to me. It was an easy (and common) swap in the '50's and ''60's.

wow, nice fast reply! thank you for that. I would post better pics, but I can't get to them the way ford barn loads them. it's probably that I'm not doing something right though.

wheels look later to me, with outie nubs for late hub caps, and not innie nubs like 40-48 caps

No.

I expect you'll find more parts than just wheels under that car, that are not from a '36 Ford. Not saying that's good or bad, just saying to expect it.

Welcome to the ford barn. I like your coupe, I had one in the late 1960's.
Mine had a Columbia two speed and a mercury engine with glass pacs.
Dark gray primer and bucket seats.
Lots of fun.
Bruce

that was the plan, 875 mile round trip, rented a car hauler form u-haul, went to the guys shop and the pics he sent did not show the floors enough. the firewall had also had the dreaded battery mod done to it with a torch. he said he had the title, but when i showed up, he said he couldn't find it. he lowered the price a bit, but not enough for me to deal with all he dumped on me. i think he thought that after driving all that way, renting the trailer, i wouldn't leave without it. i was there 3 hours, and u-haul didn't charge me, so that was great,i just burned a lot of gas. oddly enough, i still had fun. i'm not done yet.

Well that sucks..... Too bad he could not have been more honest with you - but you did the right thing. I think I would have given him a half-price offer and then rolled if he passed on it..

indeed. last summer, he wanted 12k, I had 10.5k so it didn't happen. didn't see the car on CL for over a year. then it showed up again, but at 18k!! he didn't do one thing to it. I asked about the huge price difference, and told him I would like to offer the same price as last summer. he said with me, he would go 14k, I said I need lots of good pictures then. he sent some but it took forever. I said firewall and floors were what I really wanted to see. they were good enough that I headed up there, let this be a lesson that you've got to see things in person! we all know that though, right? I offered him 10k, he said he would take the 12k from last summer when I was up there, but the car was buried in junk, I couldn't see the whole thing. I said I would not pay the 12k even from last summer now that I've seen the floors, and left. that the story on this one! i'll work on my 40 coupe, and my 56 big window for now. maybe it's a blessing? who knows. . . .

All good fun and memories of the hunt.

The 875 mile round trip was as good as a holiday memory.

The fact that it did not pan out was probably a good omen.

Much better than dragging something home after much deliberation and thought, and the next day, after looking at it in the garage in a sober light ... , wished you hadn't.

Re: 36' lug pattern not wide five.

UPDATE! well I ended up getting it after all. somebody bought it from the seller I was dealing with and decided he wanted a 30 model a. I found his conversation on another site and commented that if he wanted to get rid of it to let me know. and he did. he had started to buy some things for it and said I had to take them too, whatever, it's ok. another long drive, this time with my nephew, and it's home. now to stare at it for awhile. . .

Looks like you might have scored on the basics for a nice car.. If you need any help with parts/info let me know, I'm not that far away..
The raised lip on the wheels tell me that they could be Mopar in lieu of Ford. Ford wheels 1940 and later are 5 on 5.5, not 5 on 5. Is this a miss print in your earlier comments.

Re: 36' lug pattern not wide five.

1940 Hydraulic brakes would give you those drums and pattern. Or simply putting 1935 drums on a 1936 car and keeping the original mechanical brakes is a possibility too.
