Another temperature gauge question
 

My 35 Tudor's original temperature gauge appears to be functioning correctly, but the liquid in the gauge has gone clear, making it visible only if the sunlight hits it from the drivers side window, not the most reliable method to watch engine temperature.... I've tried searching but can't seem to find if the liquid can be re-tinted... any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just put new red liquid in my fuel gauge. Not sure if it is the same liquid for a temperature gauge. Here is what I bought from Classic & Exotic. Guys on the barn were saying this is the only fluid that will stay red and not fade. Someone else will have to advise if this is proper for a Ford temperature gauge.

Did a little searching on the barn as I am not familiar with the type of temperature gauge you have as I don't have one. It looks like your gauge is a sealed unit - so forget my previous comments. You could search for info - sounds like these gauges are a little tricky to get working correctly.

As you rightly say in a later post they are a sealed unit . I wish you better luck with the Classic and Exotic fluid . Mine decoloured just like the less expensive ones. Karl

I have a similar situation with my new '36 gauge. It was working fine then after sitting for a couple weeks the liquid has disappeared.
Unfortunately, the units do seem to be sealed and changing the fluid would not likely be possible. Wasn't cheap either.

If you search on "1935 Temperature Gauge" here on the Ford Barn you will see a number of threads on rebuilding these closed gauges. Here is a reply from one from Morris Gauge that says the fluid he uses to rebuild with doesn't fade:


"I believe Classic and Exotics only sells fluid for hydrostatic fuel gauges. As for temperature gauges, our dye has yet to fade. "

There are other people listed who also rebuild these in some of these threads, but this response specifically addresses the fading color issue you posted about.

Morris Gauge aka Travis Morris has had some bad reviews on the HAMB. His web-site is down now. Allegedly, folks sent instruments to him and never got them back and some were valuable according to the respondents.
