Stoplight switch installation

I have a 28/29 stoplight switch. There is a spring installed between the switch and the stoplight switch link. When the brake pedal is depressed the spring stretches but does not move enough to pull the stoplight link and swich on. Should the spring be there or not? Can someone post a photograph of the correct switch/link/spring assembly installed?:)

Re: Stoplight switch installation

The spring stops the pedal from wenching the stop light switch whilst allowing sufficient to pull to switich it on . Things get claggged up with muck, a good clean is often indicated, careful adjustment of the spring is sometimes neededto get just the optimum stretch. ( in my case aI've fitted a sshortt length of chain so that spriing loading can be adjusted easily). I've heard that some repro switches are of poor quality( so what's new eh?)

Re: Stoplight switch installation

The spring was installed in place of a LINK, because someone didn't have the brakes properly adjusted, and the pedal probably went so far to the floor that it would mess up the switch as John said. The link is pictured in the Model A parts books from Bert's, Bratton's, Snyder's and others.

What Tom said.

My '28 coupe has an original stoplight switch and link.

The brake pedal has bottomed- out a few times under my driving, with no apparent harm to the switch.

I have mine adjusted so that the light comes-on within the first 1/4" of pedal travel.
