Upholstery question
 

I have a set of seat springs from Snyder's for my '32 Roadster. Anyone know how much height the padding and cover will add to the springs? I am building a lowered seat riser and need to know how high to make it.

My best estimate is 2"-3".

I use burlap over springs, 1/2" thk jute carpet padding with 1" foam over that. Also I use vinyl over 1/2" sew foam. Pull this down to a finished height of 6 to 6 1/2" remember it ha to go unde the back rest. The finhed height should be a tight fit under the backrest when finished. 36fordguy an upholsterer

Generally the top of the seat bottom and the front side of the seat back are the only places where padding is placed with some overlap on the top & sides of the seat back depending on the application. 2 to 3 inches is a good general pad height as was previously mentioned. Too little and you will feel the springs. Too much and you can have cupping eventually after the foam starts to weaken from use. If you can mock up your spring locations then you can get an idea where to place them. A lot of folks that do custom installations just build up there seats with different thicknesses and firmness ratings of foam on top of a plywood base so they can get lower than an OEM spring box will get them. Zig-Zag springs can also be used to build a lower down spring assembly but that is getting into more work than most folks want to do.

Just keep in mind, if you lower the seat base, you may have to fabricate a taller seat back or modify your spring assembly to make it match well in a roadster body for a pleasing look to the trim. There are a lot of ways you can go about it.
