Street view @ brake handle ? Dear All,
Is it normal that I can see the road through the brake handle area? Should there be a cover or so? Can' t find a part at Mac or Drake.... Greetings from Germany. BB |

Re: Street view @ brake handle ? The boot on this page?

Re: Street view @ brake handle ? If it is your '36, originally there was no 'boot', but rather a sponge rubber seal at the base of the hand brake handle held in place with an oval stamped steel retainer (about 1 1/2" wide by about 4") with an oval hole in the center. The retainer slips over the top of the hand brake handle. Sorry I do not have a photo, but if Don Rogers chimes in he will no doubt have a photo of the subject parts.

Re: Street view @ brake handle ? If I am correct, and rarely am, the 39 Mercury was the only vehicle that Henry used a rubber boot on the gearshift. But then you are talking about emergency brake lever. I remember, as a kid, watching the road go by under the car, looking through the emergency brake handle hole in the floor. Probably was supposed to have foam rubber "boot" under the mat.

Re: Street view @ brake handle ? Dear All,
Thank you for all the information. Now I know that the part I'm looking for is called boot 😊 and where I can get one. Spring is in in Germany, I take my car out to my first vintage car show on Sunday. I'm a bit excited 😉 Have a great weekend. |
Re: Street view @ brake handle ? 2 Attachment(s)
V8Germany, As David G said...You need the sponge rubber seal and retainer that goes around the brake handle. Here are some images of the items. Metal support and gasket should be equal in size. Not as shown.

Here is the seal in place on my 36. Ed

Re: Street view @ brake handle ? Don,
Thanks! Ed, With respect, it appears as though you are using the '32-'34 seal that does double duty around both the shift lever housing and the hand brake. The '35-'36 seals were two separate pieces, one for the hand brake as shown in Don's photo above and the other for the shift lever housing by itself. |
Re: Street view @ brake handle ? Thanks Don. This was purchased many years ago, early 80's. Probably sold then as the seal for the 35-36's. Good information to know. Ed
