'49 F1 Transmission Mount
 

Hey Everyone,
I'm new to the Ford Barn and I'm hoping someone out there might have a few photos of what I'm looking for. I'm currently restoring a 1949 Ford F1 with a 226 6 cylinder flathead. The transmission that came with the truck is a 4 speed manual. I believe the transmission was a replacement to the original 3 speed transmission. I'd like to see if anyone here has 48-50 F1 that came with a 4 speed and if you may have any photos of the transmission mount? I'll include a couple photos of the mount I'm currently working with.

Yikes, someone cut the cross member out. It could be repaired but it might be easier to find another good one. The 3-speed was standard for the 226 in the F1 but the 4-speed was not so they made it fit.

There is only one cross member listed in the parts book for the F1 and it is about the same clear back to 1942. The part number is 21C-5025. The F2 & F3 would have the truck type cross member that was made for the 4-speed. It is part number 01T-5025.

thats the cross member that the AV8 guys like using, so they do come up for sale, but are in demand. gotta jump when you see one!

The f-1 cross member was same for 3 speed and 4 speed , were the frame mount changed was when the parking was on the rear of trans mostly on the larger trucks.I sent u a pm I have everything u need for your restoration.thanks Glenn Sanders

Perfect time to go to a T5.... the damage has already been done! What 4-sp was in there? If it was the 4-sp spur (non-synchro) is must have been out of an F-2 or larger truck, they had mounts down low.

I agree. A T5 install will clean that whole mess up.

Thanks for the part numbers! I'll check them out. I do believe the tranny was from an f2 or f3.

I hadn't considered going to a T5 Transmission yet but that gives me something to think about. Thanks for the info!

My '48 F-1 had a four-speed from the factory. I converted it to three-speed about ten years ago. Drives like a new truck! Lots of differences between the two assemblies. Different mount, different driveshaft, different u-joints, different yoke. Whatever path you chose, the first thing you have to do is replace that butchered cross member. Form my point of view, I would strongly advise against using the four-speed. They are terrible from a drivability perspective!!!

The light duty 3-speed is still relatively easy to find since they were used for so many years. The heavy duty 3-speed is a better trans but harder to find and I'm not sure of the fit to a 226. The Tremec T170 RTS transmission from a relatively late mid 80s F150 is a 3-speed with a 4th gear overdrive that is being used for flathead V8 applications with some adapter help. I don't know about 6-cylinder applications though. It would be easy to convert to a V8 if you wanted. The T170 has the shifter in a position very close to the original but a person would have to build up that cut up cross member to get it mounted and sturdy. It would call for a custom driveshaft too but would be a very road worthy mod.

In my area (georgia) putting in a granny gear 4 spd via a set of torches seems to have been pretty common back in the day. Guess as the trucks got older and worked harder folks wanted the lower gearing. I went through several parts trucks before scoring a good crossmember to fix my F1.

Another suggestion would be its a great time for a 49-50 mercury overdrive...
