1935-36 Windshield Question
 

I have a 36 passenger car windshield frame that I need to take apart and clean/restore. Screws are soaking with penetrating oil. My question is what size/thread are the screws that hold the two halves together. Would like to be sure before I run a tap thru to clean up the threads.

This was one of the hardest jobs on my restore. you will be lucky to save the joining bar that the screws thread into without ruining the threads. I made new bars and used 10/32x3/8 oval head screws

I agree with Jim. I tried thread pitch of 20, 24 & 28 and never did feel comfortable with any of them. I ended up running a thread tap thru. It tighten down and held find.

Add a 50/50 mix of Acetone and auto trans fluid to use as a penetrating oil also

All the ones I have taken apart have had 10-32 screws; but the heads seem to be a little flatter than a regular oval head.

I can't give any advice on taking these Windscreens apart, but I do know that owners here with 35/36 Ford closed cars try and locate the Windscreen Frames from the British Ford Pilot. They are the same shape and are made of Brass. They never need go rusty or need replacing. The Pilots were manufactured from 1949 to 1951 and do look very similar to the 36 Ford Sedans. Ford Pilots were sold in Australia as well as in their Homeland, Great Britain.

Can't remember for sure from the last time I messed with one, but sometimes Ford liked to use some less common thread sizes (at least less common today?). Might they be 12-24?

Pulled one out of a frame I just picked up, funny head 10-32 like I remembered and just like Randy's pictures, now I just need to find the bag of them I bought a few years back.

Thank you for the responses. 10-32 was what I was looking for. Just wanted to be sure from people who have been there, done that.

I recently had to take apart a '37 GMC windshield frame. They are very similar to the Ford frames.
I soaked the screws with PB Blaster, after letting them soak for awhile I put a good hammer head screw driver into the slot, striking same with a light ball peen hammer, repeated the process many times.
Having not much luck I brought in the "big guns". A friend of mine that is one of the best metal men I have ever encountered, had told me about one of his secrete weapons to loosen rusted bolts.. An electric heat gun.. I heated the windshield frame in the area of the screws repeatedly with the heat gun, applied more "Blaster", let it sit, more heat gun.
After a couple of days the screws and joint blocks came right out in perfect condition. :D
