T-5 Modification I have an 87 Mustang T-5, and I'd like to install an S-10 tale shaft and shifter.
Is there a video of this modification I can see. Anyone have an S-10 tale shaft?? Thanks Ol' Ron |
Re: T-5 Modification Ron,I have a mate who rebuilds these boxes. They were fitted to the TVR sportscars over here.If you need any info give him a call and Im sure he will answer any questions you may have.
I've included a link to an article about a TVR gearbox that may help. http://www.mgbv8.talktalk.net/T5_Gearbox.htm. |
Re: T-5 Modification google search results were plenty, hope this helps

Re: T-5 Modification And Ron, you may already know this, but you need a few other parts with the tail housing, you need the shifter shaft, etc. Do you have experience with a T5 rebuild in general? I think I may have links to original T5 rebuilds which should help if your interested.
Also need to decide how you are going to deal with the speedometer drive. |
Re: T-5 Modification I just had my trans shop do this. He used a 93 up S 10 tail shaft with the electric speedometer. Said it was easier than the manual speedo. I have used one of these in a flathead powered roadster using a Shadow Rods adapter and it worked great. Ron: If you can't find a video I can get you his number.

Re: T-5 Modification No, the last time I had a trans apart was back in the 60's when we were shortening the old ford boxed to put behind the SBC and Olds engines. Surprising how well they held up, but not for long. I've asked around here, but nobody knows. I can send it down country, but I was quoted 600 bucks. Not in the budget. However the information given here might help, don't have to do it right now, be awhile before I have to worry about it. Long winter!!!

Re: T-5 Modification The changeover is not too bad - you will need to either shorten the Mustang shifter shaft that extends to the back of the tailshaft or use the one from the GM T5 and the whole shifter plate if you have it. If you have the mechanical tailshaft, I used an AC feral that almost matched the main shaft diameter and epoxied it in place with the GM T5 speedo gear. I will dig up some pics tonight for you and send them ....

Re: T-5 Modification You will need the tailshaft housing and the top-cover. You can shorten the shifter shaft in the top cover, but you will also need to accurately drill the shifter shaft for the retaining pin - I don't have that dimension anywhere for a DIY, but I'm sure someone can find it or measure it.
You will also have to deal with the speedometer. There is someone selling a kit to move the speedo gear, but you can shim the shaft to accept the gear - retaining the gear is the trick. Alternatively, you can just use a GPS ground speed readout from a GPS or a smart phone... |
