Hi everyone, Could some one explain to me how to adjust the fan beit on my 1946 ford v8 flathead 1 ton truck ? Also the belt itself hits the bail wire that holds the dist.cap on,knocking the cap off. What can I do to stop that ?I really don't want to relocate the dist.
Any suggustion would be appreciated

It shouldn't hit the distributer. How about some pictures on what you have.

too loose a belt might cause it to hit the dist cap. how many belts does the engine have?

The fan belt is fairly loose but the tighter it is, the closer to the bail-wire it is. I am thinking of a wider belt so it don't sit so low in the pulleys. Any thought on that ?

First, check the fan for excessive play (internal bearing surface wear). Parts are available for the old oil filled fans. If that has no effect, convert it to a crab cap set up. It is not a difficult conversion since all that is really needed are the clips that hold the cap, the cap itself, and a set of ignition leads appropriate to the crab type set up.

The belt should be 5/8" at the flat side. A narrow belt would indeed ride lower in the grooves.

So it's the inside of the belt that is rubbing the bail. It would definitely need a wider belt or one or both sheaves have excessive wear allowing it to go too deep in the sheave grooves.

The belt should be wide enough to be about flush with the outside of the pulleys, the belt can not ride in the bottom of the groove

Are the pulleys in line, perhaps the fan shaft is pushed back in the bracket

Be sure you have the correct belt. The modern V belts must be overtightened, as they bottom in the pulley groove. The correct belt depends on contact between the sides of the belt giving ample ditributor clearance The belt runs very close to the distributor, but if the cap bail is completely back in the groove, it should clear the belt. Order from a competent supplier.

Who would you recommend as competent supplier ? Mac's
seems to have gone down hill to the point of no return. I'd like to buy the whole fan hub if I can find it.

If you know the right circumference and the width of the top (5/8?) you can go to an auto parts store and they can look up the proper size. I believe that when I needed a different size belt I went on line and found a chart somewhere. I still ended up at O'Riellys Auto Parts and got the right size.

So was the issue the wrong belt?
