36 roadster floor mat

Finally getting around to putting my roadster back together. I see Drake sells a black floor mat. The 36 Resto book calls for a gray mat. Are these available anywhere or do I go with black? Thanks, Jack.

Seems to me this discussion of "Mat color" came up recently in a post but for a different year...if I recall correctly someone in the post said they Spray painted the black mat the correct color with an interior paint? Might have been on a 1932 post within the last week or so??? Might try a search!!!!

I am assuming you are talking about the front floor mat and not the rear rumble seat floor mat? Check to see what Carpenter has to offer now in his catalog or on his website. I don't recall the colors that were mentioned in the book, but I didn't think it was gray. Maybe taupe? But that might be for closed cars. CRS.

It was an Aug 4th post on 37 Floor Picture.....Dave Rehor posted about how he fixed original floor mats and used SEM paint for the correct color. Search 37 floor picture

The only colours I've seen are black and taupe, never seen a grey mat.

Starting in the '36 model year, the mat color was Benton Gray. It is as much brown as it is gray. The '32-'35 mat color was taupe.

I have an unrestored 36 Cabriolet with 7548 original miles and the floor mat is black.

@ JoeGerman
Not stirring the pot or trying to start anything BUT the Zen Master has spoke in post #6. I would say your car may be unrestored but as the stated color in post #6 by Dave, I would say your mat was replaced at some point with the wrong mat IMO.

Re: 36 roadster floor mat

According to the 35/36 resto book, early 36's had a taupe mat as did the 35. Very early on, it was changed to Benton Gray.. Carpenter has a taupe floormat which I ordered. Curiously, the rear roadster mats are Benton Gray. I figure if I need to change the color of the mat, it will be easier to do it with a taupe mat, rather than a black one. Thanks for the insights.

Re: 36 roadster floor mat

I understand that the current Carpenter '36 front mat is incorrect in another and in many respects far more important way than any color issue. They come with the various holes for the hand brake, starter button, etc., but the big one for the transmission shift lever housing is in the wrong location. It is located for the shift lever housing of a '35, which of course is further rearward than that of the '36.

Is the shifter location proper in the black Drake mat?

Benton Gray is the way to go...Carpenter has... The Drake is taupe and did not match my 36 5 window Deluxe...

Re: 36 roadster floor mat

Carpenter only showed taupe. Drake listed as black in new catalog.

My 35 Cab is Taupe and it all fit well with the exception of the long ago change hydraulic brake pedal.

Hi Dave, I have known for many years of your expertise on 32's but only recently looking at F B have I become aware of your detailed knowledge of all the early V8's. Quite amazing and thanks for sharing all of it with the rest of us. PHIL SPAID

One of the BIG problems with a rubber mat is the likelihood of it tearing especially when checking the battery. Interesting, in Canada they had a 1936 "special deluxe" which had factory carpeting.

I purchased a front and rumble area Taupe rubber matts from Dennis Carpenter
less than a month ago. It even had insulation carpet on the underside. Made with new molds and the edges are very distinct! Ron Long (gnolnor)

Anyone know if you can use a 39 mat in a 35 if it has juice brake pedals and 39+ trans?

'36 front floor mat update: C & G has the correct front floor mat for '36. I bought two benton gray mats, which arrived yesterday. They fit well. The C & G web site says they have them in stock in both benton gray and taupe.

Re: 36 roadster floor mat

I bought the mat for my 37 Cabriolet from C&G. It fit very well except for the brake pedal. (40 brakes) They said they do not have a rear (behind seat) or rumble seat mat available. I used the old front mat in pieces for the rear section but still have no rumble seat mat.
