Front Spring Fit Help
 

In rebuilding the front end of a 1928, I found the original spring was shot. I purchased a new front spring from Snyders. It was the one they list as a show quality spring. I think they source it from A-Springs. Anyway, the total spring set is thicker top to bottom than the original. It fits in the cross member nicely, with the square bolt head up through the cross member, but I cannot get the castle nuts on the front clamp set up his enough by quite a bit to cotter pin it.

The bottom leaf spring shows more than the original did beneath the cross member and measurements confirm the spring is thicker. Short of finding another spring - and this one was expensive - anyone have any ideas on how to make it work so I can get the castle nuts on and pinned?

I have not worked with these aftermarket springs.
Is the top leaf beveled on the sides so it fits fully to the top of the crossmember?

If they advertise "show quality spring" and it is thicker than the original, then IMO it is not a "show quality spring" and the using the original clamps will not work right.

Tom is right...the top spring leaf should be beveled on both sides. Look at your original spring to see what he was refering to. If that does not work...call Snyders to find out how to remidy the situation.

Thanks. The top spring is beveled. Made sure when I bought it. I will give Snyder's a call. Was hoping I was missing an easy solution.

It is not the "easy" solution you want or need but the "correct" and "safest" solution!

have used these remade springs and they are very very good, key is to re do the bevel on the top spring, it will allow it to go up higher in the crossmember for the bolt to sit good. Try that first and it should make a difference

Is it possible for you to let the car weight down on the spring, to make sure it's seating down properly into the crossmember. Are there different plates available, to accommodate THICKER springs????
