37 wiring
 

I have my motor on a test stand and want to wire it to run it. I need to know were the wiring goes. Generator wire, coil wire, starter switch. Do you need the ballast resistor in line? Sorry for all the rookie questions. Just trying to breath some life back in this Flathead. Bruce

Do you have the wiring diagram? I somewhat depends on how you want to wire it up. All you need to fire the engine is a coil wire and yes I would use the resistor if you are going to run it for any length of time. The generator on a 37 uses a cutout so there is just one wire. You could wire up a starter solenoid, starter push button and a toggle switch for the ignition. Or just use jumper wires.

I attached a diagram I draw up a while back for a 12v neg ground system. A 6v would be similar with the polarity reversed. This one uses a later key ignition switch. The generator cutout wire would just connect to the battery side of the starter solenoid if you are wanting to connect it. If you need help I can draw you up a wiring diagram.

Tell me what you are looking for, are you wanting to use any parts that will work or the 37 Ford style parts? Do you want a toggle switch for the ignition switch or a later model key ignition switch? A 37 style starter solenoid or a later model soleniod, etc?

Sorry to hijack this, JSeery can you do a diagram where the engine uses a mini starter with the solenoid piggy backed into it, like the Powermaster starter.

I want to use any parts that will get it running. Then I want to paint it and instal it in the car. I will use all the correct components then. Bruce

I'm still not total sure how you are wanting to wire it up, so I will give you a couple of options. Let me know if anyone notices any errors!

Not sure how the starter wires up, but here is a first guess. I will try and check it out.

Note:Looks like you can wire it up using an external solenoid or directly. All the ones I am finding are 12V neg ground!!!!! Do they make a 6V pos ground unit?

I updated to a 12v neg ground system.

Depends on how you have it wired up. You can switch it around, but need to have the polarity on the coil correct.

just curious as our old fords are positive ground and your original post's drawing has negative ground....subsequent drawings have positive ground.....thanks....Mike

Mike I posted with it that it was for a 12v neg ground and that it would have to be changed for a 6v pos ground! Then I offered to redraw it if anyone wanted it. They did and so I did. A little confused by your comment, I'm I missing something?

Yes thanks for the diagram - sorry I threw a bit of a curve ball at you, I should have said I was going 12v neg. ground
