Making Your Own Carpets

I recently wanted to make a front carpet for my 32 Coupe. After you have picked a carpet, made a pattern and cut out the carpet, the big job is putting on an edging which can be expensive if you take the carpet to an installer. Take a look at the binding that is provided by the Installerstore.com. I have just finished using the Instabind Carpet Binding Tape and it works just great. I used their "regular style" binding. I also picked up some pyramid style rubber padding at Hershey as a heel pad and trim around the transmission/emergency brake handle. I cut out a rectangular rubber pad and a corresponding hole in the carpet and used regular carpet seam tape to hold the pad in place. I found that if you put the front edge of the rubber pad at the break point between the two floor boards, you get a stress free fit.

I think I was able to make this carpet for half the cost of a professional carpet. Have some fun! Ed

What did you use to make a pattern with? Paper, cardboard, or whatnot!

When I did my A, I went to walmart and got a pkg of poster board, fitting the poster board together in the car with blue painter's tape. Worked for me. Very time consuming (I thought), and remember MEASURE two OR three times and CUT once.

Ed in Maine: Just ck'd out their website. How is the binding applied to the carpet? Glued? Sewn? Thanks in advance.

I used a heavy brown paper that you would use to wrap a package for shipping. When making the pattern, don't forget that the carpet edging has some width and the pattern is reduced somewhat. Ed

Hello Paul, the binding uses a strong contact cement. You just peel off the covering. You can readjust the binding soon after applying by pulling it off but by next morning it is well cured and very strong. Ed

I forgot that you also use a small amount of hot glue on the top side of the binding to secure the binding to the edge of the carpet. It is a good product. Ed

If you had a rubber floor mat for say a coupe that would make the template for the carpet.
