toploaders

i have 3 or 4 good toploaders but haven't been able to I.D. them. i want to put one in my 47 tudor sedan.

1. unstamped but was told it is a 39 but it don't say 78 on the casing.

2. 18 or I8-4335583

3. 18 or I8-6664769

i have a nice set of gears out of my old 41 ford that someone told me would fit the 39 box perfectly.

thanks for any help.....

Re: toploaders

Generally, the part number for case is cast into the lower left hand rear (where the output shaft and u-joint are) portion of the case. More often than not, you really have to scrub it with a wire brush since grease/crud tends to accumulate there.

The number you are listing seem to be the ones stamped into the upper front portion of the "bell" part of the trans.

Re: toploaders

Those are the serials of the engine and the car, giving you year of manufacture, but you need also to ID innards and things like clutch lever and mount because so many have been hot rodded...this old post I put together lays out most of the identification to fully deconstruct the transmission and its history. Van pelt's site will give you the serial # breakdown, and his book is the best on rebuilding.

i believe the "unstamped" trans is probably a replacement unit, trans 2 and 3, as said above are the serial numbers(pre-VIN) of the cars the transmissions came from.

the serial numbers will tell you what year the cases are with some research, you should be able to idenetify the unstamped one by the shape of the trans case and the insides. also noted above the part number is not this number on top of the case but is under the rear bearing retainer/trans mount, probably under an inch of caked on grease and dirt and will take some elbow grease to figure it out

everything you need to identify the trans is here
