Connecticut 1928 License Plates

A friend gave me a set of 1928 Ct license plates for my 1928 A. They needed to be restored - rust, paint poor etc. I think the correct background is black. Not sure if flat, semi-gloss, or gloss. Numbers are white. Not sure if reflective. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The yellow/black one is selling for $40 (Ebay)
Maybe different colors for different parts of that vast State.

The color is actually a very dark blue. The state DMV thinks it is black, but I have some that clearly show very dark blue on the back side. Look for a blue/black and that should work. The background was the dark blue and the numbers originally white, but they fade to an off white, almost yellow for cars. The commercial plates were white, with the very dark blue numbers in 28. Commercial plates had oposite colors until 1932, when they started a separate commercial plate.

That seems so cheap! Vintage enamel plates in good knick will bring maybe $10K - $15K per pair down here!

Enamel plates (porcelin) bring big money here also, but they were only used in the first few years in Connecticut. Then they were a flat sheet metal with paint, then the numbers and letters were stamped from behind to make the digits raised, for easier painting.

I used www.restoreatag.com. I will admit that he isn't cheap, and he took a long time...but his workmanship is spectacular.

For the do-it-yourselfer, Rustoleum Painter's Touch brand midnight blue is very close for a background color (available from art stores). Model Master brand light ivory makes for a nicely aged look on the letters/numbers and border (available at hobby shops). Don't use the display plate at the CT Motor Vehicle Dept. as a model, the background has turned black from age.

You gentlemen seem be be talking blue. The 31 plates I'm running are a maroon color with "white" letters/numbers. Unrestored with some "patina". Correct??

Sounds like a recipe to pass on... As there are many excellent tag restorers operating with a quick turnaround and a decent price of the 110.00 vicinity

'28 Connecticut plates are supposed to be white letters/numerals on a dark blue background. http://www.worldlicenceplates.com/jp...S_CTXX_GI1.jpg

During the Model A era Connecticut produced license plates with a blue background on even numbered years and red background on odd numbered years. Presumably, it was an effort to allow police to recognize delinquent registrations from a distance. Commercial plates were produced in a reverse pattern, white background with red or blue letters (see burner31's pics above).
