'41 ford pickup ID #

The ownership certificate on my 41 pickup shows an ID # starting with N and then five numbers. It is not the same as the # on the frame. In fact it is not even close. As near as I can verify it appears the truck has been in California it's entire life. I do know that California once registered vehicles by the engine #. The truck has signs that it was a 6 cylinder or a 4 cylinder when new. The main sign is the gas line coming out of the passenger side of the tank and running down the right frame rail. The question I have does anyone know the numbers that were stamped on the engine blocks of the 4 cylinder trucks? I think the ID # I have is for a 4 cylinder truck as those were industrial or tractor motors. Any info would be appreciated.

when the engine/trans was assembled at the Rouge numbers were stamped into the bell housing part of the transmission. this number was stamped into the frame at three locations, near steering box, under drivers door and on the upward dogleg of the ds frame, at least that is where they were supposed to be. 9N was the designate of the 4 cylinder tractor engine that was installed in the truck, these engines originally had a number stamped around the starter/Bendix area, on one of my original 4 cylinder trucks the serial number begins with 9N xxxx with 3 speed trans the other began with a 11T xxxx with a 4 speed trans. does your truck have the dropped front cross member?

It does have the dropped front crossmember. Checking the Ford tractor site I found that the regular 4 cylinder industrial engines had the engine # stamped on a flat boss on the left side of the engine. Check www.yesterdaystractors.com. At the bottom it shows industrial engines with a serial # starting with NNN.
