1946 ford grill gaurd

question about a 1946 ford grill guard, did it have the ford script in the center of the upper bar ? I have one but I don't know how to tell if its a aftermarket or a ford original accessory or if it was even offered by ford.

I looked through the book, "Ford 1946-1948 Closing the years of tradition." and they do not show that as an accessory. I guess they were aftermarket and who knows how many are out there is different forms.

The Accessory Grille Guards on the 1946 Fords do not have the Ford Script.

Chuck is correct, the only front end related accessories were Bumper Tips, Winter Front and Bug Guard Screen. Are you sure that the piece you have is not from a '40. There were several aftermarket grill guards made, but not by Ford.

The first production 1946 Ford that was given to President Truman has the same grille guard as in the picture above(no Ford script).

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd

According to the 1941-1948 Ford Restoration Book, published by The Early Ford V8 Club of America, on page A-8, it states that the front Bumper Centre Guard was optional from 1941 to 1946.
When the Bumper Guards were redesigned for 1947, no Centre Guard was available. 1946 was the last year for these Guards.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd

The one I have is like the guard shown on the black convertible above. I also have the original bolts that almost look bent but the closer look they look to be made this way to work with the contour of the bumper. I took it off a stock low mileage 46 ford but didn't know the history of it.

Now for the next question. .......whats it worth ? Has driver quality chrome and no damage.

I have one on my 42 and has no Ford script. I put a small Blue Oval on mine from a Ford Taurus. Fits great and for my personal taste.

There's no script on the 42-46 grille guard.

Hi Richard, Merry Christmas
My 46 has the lower crossbar also. Original but don't know if it came from the factory or if the dealer drilled holes in the guards to attach the bar.

My grill gaurd has the lower crossbar and I have a second set of guards with a hole drilled In them. I guess that hole is for a crossbar then?

All 1946 Fords had the lower bar attached to the Bumper Guards at the bottom. The Licence Plate Bracket was attached to this Lower Bar. Refer to attached photos. Only thing missing are the bolts holding the Licence Plate Bracket.

did all of the grill guards have the lower bar?

mercman from oz 12-24-2015 12:26 AM

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd

The Accessory Grille Guards were never available in Australia, however, as the lower bar supported the Licence Plate Holder, I believe that all 1946 Fords had this bottom bar, whether they just had the standard issue Bumper Guards, or the Accessory Grille Guard.

Here is a picture of new 46 Fords. Looks like the third one in has the lower bar. Most don't.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd

You learn something new every day! I thought the bottom rail between the front bumper guards were standard, the picture "old ford2" posted shows cars without them. The license plate bracket on my '46 attaches to it. Does anyone know how the front plate would attach without the lower bar? What the picture does not show, is if the bumper guards had the holes for the lower bar already punched in them. I wonder if it has something to do like when the early car's after the war were shipped without bumpers and were put on at a later date at the dealer?

I have a 46 Super Deluxe Coupe and it has a grill guard but I can't remember if it has Ford scrip on it or not. I haven't looked at it in awhile plus the fact I am out of town and it is still wrapped up from being re chromed. I can look when I get back home next week.

Re: 1946 ford grill gaurd

It's correct there is no Ford script on the top bar at center. I've had about 20 sets of NOS '46 bumper guards over the years and all the fronts had the hole (square) in them. I was under the impression that all the cars had the lower bar between the guards to facilitate the front license plate mount as seen on most of the cars in the above picture. The few that don't have it is strange to me.
