8ba flywheel and clutch question

i bought a running 8ba from a guy and he gave me some extra stuff too. i got both the car and truck bells, and two flywheels, and a 10" and 11" clutch. i'm using the car bell, and lighter flywheel, but the pp bolt pattern is wrong. i have here 9", 10", and 11" pp's, and none fit. cant find a part # on the flywheel, my books only go to 48, but i see speedway catalog shows a 10 1/2" long style plate and disc. really? 8ba's had that?

Sounds like you may have a flywheel drilled for a Borg & Beck (Mercury style) pressure plate. A very suitable alternative , and I would think available through Napa etc.. Paul Selfe.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

Are the bolt pattern evenly spaced or in 3 groups ?
That would tell if its a mercury style.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

Ford used a 9 1/2" pressure plate. 10 1/2" was used in later engines.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

bolt patterns are three pairs, like for the long style

They will be evenly spaced, 9 holes. Paul Selfe.

Sorry about that, I meant to say 6 holes, not sure if they are evenly spaced, but they appear to be. Paul Selfe.

Well, you've got a lot different wheels to pick from, be nice if you post some pic front and back, (48 and older style with the wider ring gear 9in. 10 and 11in.) (and the 8ba 49-53 style with the rarrow ring gear 9-1/2in. 10in. and 11in. and the Merc b-b style with the 6 evenly spaced bolt patten.) picture please. Walt

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

You didn't indicate what the fitment issues are, but if you are using the Merc. half bell the long style PP's will not fit because the counterweights will contact the half bell. Is that the issue? The Merc. half bell is designed to be used with a Borg and Beck PP. If that is the case use the truck half bell as those were designed for the Long PP.

Edit: Oops, I missed the bolt hole mismatch in your original post.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

If the pp bolt holes go completely through the flywheel it is an 8ba wheel.
If the pp bolt holes are blind holes then you have a 59a flywheel, lets establish what wheel you have and then go from there.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

bolt holes go all the way thru the flywheel. the old wear marks on the flywheel are about 9 1/2". that threw me too because i dont see a 9 1/2" disc available. the other flywheel is thicker (3/4" off the ring gear, about 9/16 on the one i want to use) and an 11" disc and pp bolt up. i have the cast iron half bell, which was mounted on an 8ba, with 11" long style set up.that all fit, i just would like the lighter flywheel and smaller clutch.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

Perhaps time to tell us what gearbox you gonna use that narrows down which clutch and plate to use.
And you can always drill the flywheel for a smaller plate if you want to.

32-48 ford 3 speed trans, in a 34 and yes i had thought about drilling it to fit, i just thought the parts all interchanged.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

I changed a pressure plate on a 8ba and bought a 9 1/2" with the 2 holes 3" apart center to center. It was wrong bolt pattern.
What the old pattern was is 3 1/8" c/c and is a 10" PP.
I think the 11" is the same pattern.???

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

Each pressure plate is unique and has a different bolt pattern. Must match the pressure plate to the flywheel or redrill.

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

holes are 3" apart, so 9 1/2" clutch?

Re: 8ba flywheel and clutch question

An 8BA 9 ½” clutch flywheel measures 3" C/C between the paired holes and 7 ½ "

apart. An 8BA 10” clutch flywheel measures 3 1/8” C/C between the paired holes and 7 7/8” apart.

They're close, so be careful with measuring.
