1936 Ford Truck Grill...Big truck vs half ton
 

Unfortunately, the most damaged part of my truck project it the grill, which is the showpiece of these trucks. I was searching on the internet about the grilles, seeing if I want to find a used one, or a reproduction, I ran arcross a thread, where I guy was showing the "commercial big trucks" as he called them has a different pitch at the bottom of the grill to line up better with the different fenders of the big trucks. Mine is a Model 51, so i'm assuming that counts for mine? I was thinking any 36 grill would work, but not not sure. I might could salvage mine, but it's pretty rough. Anybody heard the or experienced the same thing?

I have read the thread of which you speak, over on the Hamb board. I have a '36 1.5 ton and I really can't see the difference in my grill from the pickup. I repaired mine, so I never really confronted the issue.

There is no difference between a 36 pickup grille and a 36 large truck grille. Both have part # 67-8200-A.

That's not looking bad at all, from what I see, looks mainly like the grill bars need to be straightened?

I know that this was not the question, but I thought that I would add comparison photos of the 1935 and 1936 Ford Commercial Grilles. While they look similar, they are both different. The Grille in Grey Primer is off a 1936 Ford while the one in Red Primer is off a 1935 Ford. From the front, the difference is not immediately apparent, but from the side on shot, you can see that the sides are deeper on the 1936 Ford Grille than the 1935 Ford Grille. As Don stated, the same Grille fits the Pickup as well as the larger Trucks of the respective years.

I have seen a lot worse shaped 1936 Ford Commercial Grilles than the one Farmboy is repairing.

Thanks guys. I'll post a pic when I get to the shop. What isn't showed here is the bottom part of the shell is rusted out pretty bad. It could probably be delt with maybe. I took it to one local body shop and they didn't want to touch it. The fenders are strong, but has some pretty good rust underneath where the tires thru rocks under them from the gravel roads. He recommended a dip strip. Thinking he don't want to deal with anything like this. With time I think I can handle the fenders myself.

Here's what I'm working with on the bottom of the grill. Basically the only thing rusted out in the whole truck.

Not terrible looking, but pretty bad. I would trip dip the grill and then repair with fiberglass mat. Not an easy job, but the grill is certainly salvageable.

I would not hesitate working on that grill. Mine was really bent up but after about 8 hours into it, it looks very good. I also don't know who told you that aftermarket grills are available because they are not.

It will take a bit of work to get this Grille looking like this Red one, but it in not impossible.

I actually found a website called Wescoat auto that showed to produce the grill and a fiberglass shell if needed. Did not call or anything. Could be something no longer done? Haven't got to that point yet. This will be the last thing I put back on the truck.

Well, I bought a fiberglass '36 grille years back, that I use for instances like yours...cover shipping both ways, an you're welcome to use it...

Note, it does not have holes in it, but is a great template to make metal from...it has no grille bars...just a shell, but has served me well on repairing many '36 grills.
