New Califonia DMV legal yellow on black plates

I just read a small article in a car (bathroom) magazine. The California DMV is now accepting orders and issuing yellow on black"1960's Legacy" plates. They can be used on any year car, truck, motorcycle or trailer and personal plate numbers can be requested. $50.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/det...cyplates/index.
I think this is the best thing they've done since they put chairs in their offices.

Here's mine. I was hoping for the black on yellow '56 plates but there were not near enough pre - orders for them to be made available.

Counterfeit black plate FAIL.

The whole point of black plates is to show that your car has always been currently registered. Upon close inspection, new aluminum counterfeit plates will cause an observer to break out in a highly contagious fit of laughter.

I looked through the FAQs on the DMV site, I din't see any mention of Aluminum, it did mention a different type of "reflector paint?"

Either way, would still look better than a new white plate;)

If I'm not mistaken the new plates will come "reflectorized" so you will be able to tell the difference.

I have seen two cars with them. They look like a poor back yard paint job.

Go ahead and laugh all you want. My car was acquired out of state and had been serving as a chicken coop and had not run nor had it been tagged for many years so the continuous current registration was out of the question.
I find that the new black plates have enough aesthetic appeal to look right at home on my car. The contemporaries were a big zero and I gladly turned them in.

I have a set of these on my black 57 Tbird. Been waiting for several years for the program to begin. They look far and away better than the current white plates. They are reflecting due to state law to allow better visibility at night. The quality is very good.

Are they Aluminum as mentioned?

Yes they are stamped out of aluminum and painted with the same quality, or lack thereof depending on your personal standards, as the white plates. By law they are also supposed to be reflectorized like the white plates, but after careful examination you couldn't prove it by me.

So, are the year (62), and 'California' stamped in (like original 62 plates), or are they simply painted on like current white plates?
And, can you pick your number, like say, if you have a record of the original black plate number for your car?

I wish there was such a deal in Texas. Personalized plates are $195 a year above the regular cost or $495 for five years. I'd love to have the plate 2thpixs for my 36 woodie but not bad enough to raise my taxes by that much.

Thieving state. That is on top of my $20,000 property tax bill at a rate of 3% per year(apparently I rent my house from government.)

I have seen these quite a bit in traffic, mostly on Toyotas and Mini Coopers ect. Really? The ones I have seen are stamped, though they look a little too fresh. I think these are considered a "vanity" plate. The question about using an old number is a good one, worth checking into i guess. CADMV rules change from time to time and you never know with them. I have a pair of clear titled ones with paperwork and reg. tags linking them to the truck and they would not allow me to re-register them to the truck. It had been off the road for fifty years. Wasted over ten hours of my time talking with these guys and got nowhere. I guess there was not enough money in it for them. Honestly don't care anymore. Anytime I hear of someone dealing with CADMV , I wish them luck.

It could be worse. Be happy you don't live in Illinois....

I will not pay the CA DMV an extra 10 cents even if they made it look like an orig 1932 plate.

IIRC the DMV will not allow you to use the original numbering sequences for yellow on black plates (3 letters followed by 3 numbers) on these new plates. If you want to get that authentic look for a black plate-era car, I think it's better to get original YOM plates (California tacks on $10/year to your regi for those)-I have them on a couple of 60's era m'cycles and my son's '65 Mustang. I look on YOM plates as a vintage accessory, like having an original radio or spotlight

I was tempted to move to San Juan Capistrano when I looked at a 51 woodie there last summer. How beautiful!
