Twin Spares an option in 1930?
 

There's a 1930 Deluxe Coupe for sale near me that has spare tires on both sides of the body. Was that an option in 1930? Or a owner modification at some point?

If you requested to the dealer that you, as a Ford customer, wanted "twin spares" on your car when you were ordering it...Then it would come with "twin spares" when you got it from the factory.

It's one of those things that would have been unheard of when the car was new. Possible, yes. Likely? No.

With poor roads & poor quality tires, folks wanted MULTIPLE SPARES! some even tied them on their ROOF!
Wonder if anyone manufactured ROOF RACKS?

So, what about on the 1928/29 Model? I bought an unrestored January 1929 roadster years ago that had both front fenders with wheel wells and also support arms for the side spares attached to braces inside the cowl. It may have been a dealer option thing, of course, but could it have just been made that way by ole Henry? Seems like it would be a lot of trouble to raise the body and take of the side splash aprons and running boards to add the irons that the wheels bolt to.

Actually, the picture in my avatar is that roadster without spares in the wells. That picture was taken in 1978.

Another bit of trivia. If the twin spares came from the factory they were probably riveted in. If the dealer installed them they were bolted in.

Does a spare attach to a bracket on the cowl? Or somehow attach to the fender? Sorry for my ignorance.

As Don said above, they were not ORIGINALLY attached to any type of bracket on the cowl and "they were not factory installed or an original official Ford Accessory".

The brackets, as stated above by Charlie: "Another bit of trivia. If the twin spares came from the factory they were probably riveted in. If the dealer installed them they were bolted in"..."in" and onto the frame that is.

If you have the Ford Service Bulletins, if you are going to mget into this hobby, you can see just what we are taliking about...If not...Suggest you might want to get them.

To clarify about the cowl brackets: These brackets held steel arms that came out the sides of the cowl up high, and the arms were to hold the tops of the side mounts steady. The other typical steel arms were of course bolted to frame brackets and came up through the splash aprons ( the roadster has these too).

That roadster was sold originally in Oakland, California per the Dealer's fancy brass dealership plate riveted to the roadsters dash.

I have posted this in the past , but I will show it again. Has it says in the ad from the Seattle Times in Sept of 1929 this Town Sedan came with dual spare wheels ,but no mention of tires.

The reason I asked this question about twin spares is that I hadn't seen many two spare cars. Not saying they aren't out there but I hadn't come across many of them while surfing the web. So I was curious about whether or not they (twin spares) where an option from the factory/dealer or aftermarket or a owner modification.

Tom went through all the work to put two side mount spare on a 29 coupe for a customer. That customer after driving the car for a while now wishes they had not done so. The spare on the passenger side does cut down the amount the door opens and he (Tom) now needs to find shorter check straps so the door doesn't hit the tire every time it's opened.

You know it is best when you have a car with dual sidemounts and the rear spare.

Of course all with chrome covers!
