Based on the part number on the tag the Green Book says 1940 V8-60 three speed Transmission.

That looks to me to be a Ford Anglia transmission main case. I'm talking 105E Anglia the one with the Little Tail fins and cut back rear window.
Its a "three rail" type, that's the three holes you can see top and center on the first pic. It's a four speed trans. The three rails are gear shift rails. One is for the reverse selector, one for first and second and one for third and top.
Why it's got a V8 60 part # on it, I don't know.

I'm thinking my mate Scooder is right. English Ford Anglia (Cortina?). I've got one in the shed.

Mart,
Tis Anglia 997 cc non synchro first gear type, the 1200 Anglia and Cortina has a bit of strengthening on the outside of the case.
I'll get back to smoking my pipe.
See you at the drags this weekend?
Martin.

Regarding that "Motorcraft" tag, you have to remember that Ford began to use the Motorcraft name in 1972 after anti-trust laws forced Ford to sell the Autolite name. Someone had a boxfull of those tags and used 'em to note "early" part numbers. Just like the early, red Ford script tags ya see on parts......doesn't mean that was the tag that originally came on the part at time of manufacture. Also, an old trick used by SOME parts vendors to suggest to noobs that used stuff could be NOS. DD

If I had to guess (and I am) I would imagine the transmission was made at Ford's plant at Dagenham, England. The 4-speed transmissions in early 6 cylinder Mustangs were made there, too.

I learnt to drive in my dad's Angle box. And I still drive his old mk1 Cortina, it's my daily car. Love it.

I think those "Dagenham" boxes were the same that they put in the English MklV Zodiacs.
